Quick question - do you have to give gastrogard in the morning? I can't see why but it was my vets suggestion. My mare isn't fed, grazes 24/7 and gets top up hay. Thank you.
It is supposed to be given when the stomach is empty, considering a horse with ulcers should never be allowed to have an empty stomach that does seem counter productive, morning is usually suggested as it is then given before the first feed of the day when the stomach may have less in it, as yours is out 24/7 and therefore never going to be empty I guess you can give it at any time as long as you are consistent.
As far as I recall it does not last a full 24 hours in every horse so if you are riding it needs to be given several hours before not just after, which may be the best time for the stomach to be empty, for it to be beneficial, also leave some time after giving before feeding.
The vet that did the test on my boy yesterday said it should be given in the morning. Mine are all out 24/7 but are fed twice a day. I am also going to feed "Succeed" supplement as we feel he has hind gut problems to. Succeed is also fed once a day so will see when that should be given. That will not be as much a problem as the powder will go in his morning feed.
Thank you. She's not ridden at the minute but may be soon to test the effectiveness of GG. You mention hindgut issues - are your horses ulcers bad and/or are there any particualr reasons why you think he might have hindgut issues? My mare is very self composed and not stressy but she is grumpy (bordering on aggressive at times) - this and some ridden issues led to me testing her. She has grade 2 ulcers and fact she isnt stressy, never worked hard, not starved since ive had her (24/7 grazing and top up hay), not been medicated and not currently fed, my concern is how i stop it happening again.
We had the "Succeed" test done and it came up with a positive on both tests. My boys Ulcers are Grade 1-2 with some looking old and some looking new. He had a number of symptoms that would indicate that he had a Hind gut problem. Things such as girtheness , tight in his hamstrings, not wanting to move as freely as he was and last just My gut feeling that something was not right.
He has started on both the Succeed supplement and the Gastrogurd today and we will see how things go. Another thing I have done and that is to give him a good double handful of Alfa Oil about 20-30 minutes before I ride him.
All my horses live out 24/7 have a fibre based feed and adlib hay. The only thing against the natural way is that he is an Advanced Endurance horse. According to statistics Endurance horse are second only to race horses for having ulcers. Up to 90% of race horses will have ulcers and up to 70% of Endurance horses can have some form of Ulcers.
