Ok we are at our wit end with this now, the horse has had his 3rd scope this morning and doesnt appear to be much improvement :-/
Hes been on ulcer kind for the past 12 weeks which is way long enough to get rid of any ulcers i would think, we are now over our insurance excess and not sure where to go from here.
The horse is very well managed, with fed routine etc so cant do any more there, vet cant understand it either and is going to speak to a specialist later today, .
Anyone elses horse had stubborn ulcers that have been difficult to eradicate ? and if so how and what did you give them ?
any advice would be much appreciated, thank you

what is ulcerkind? as the only think I know by that names it the topspec feed!
has the horse been checked for underlying pain issues?

I actually found Topspec ulsakind made my mare worse with her ulcers. I ended up feeding it to my non-ulcer dustbin of a draft horse instead.

For the ulcer one I've really had to keep her diet boring. Everytime I play around with it we get a flare up. She now gets oat chaff, with a small scoop of kwik beet and a tiny amount of copra to hide her various supplements. Most of her supplements are PSSM related (so she does have underlying pain issues which don't help), but I do feed l-glutamine to support her tummy and I really, really notice the difference if I run out. Stress also sets her off and we had an awful fortnight following box rest for a foot abscess, which meant I got the Abler sachets out and she had a scoop of equishure with each feed too.

Last summer I had emergency vet visits when she actually went off her food and that needed steroids to calm down the inflammation in her stomach. We got stretched white line in the feet after that, so I'm keen to avoid any more in case it becomes full scale laminitis next time.

Have a look at Equine Science. I havent used their Ulcer product but have used a supplement of theirs for a cough and was amazed by the results. I have seen super reviews for the ulcer product. Not cheap but well worth a try

right its not ulcer kind its ulcer guard, which is similar to gastro guard but a td cheaper, hes been on it now for 12 weeks with little improvement, he has also had sucralfate along side it as they were so bad.
5 grand down the line and vets and specialists have only ever seen another one case that hadnt cleared up after this length of time.
The only clinical signs the horse is showing is tight in tummy area and not happy being girthed up, weights very good and eating well .
where to go from here ?

there is a fb group 'horses with ulcers' there are some people on there who have had longer term issues than normal that would be worth asking.

My horse was scoped amd had severe ekvets , never responded to gastroguard or any other drugs the vets had him on , horse was
Off feed very aggressive near flanks couldn't even rug him up at all , totally out of character for this horse , rescoped am disappointed scanned and not had thickened guts had rectal biopsies done and revealed severe inflammation and irritable bowel , he remained on ulcer drugs but slowly come off them steroids were added in , just been rescoped and horse was clear I was at my insurance limit xx

How are you getting on with your horse?

Mine has been a nightmare with his ulcers.

All began a year ago after he was on bute and antibiotics following his sinus operation in October 2016. Ulcers cleared up with 1st round of Ulcergold with no problem at all then fast forward to September 17 and he was so much worse than the 1st round.

He has had omeprazole injections for 4 weeks as well as sucralfate but he also had pyloric stenosis so was on prednisolone for that too. Deteriorated very quickly once the jags were finished so went on to gastrogard. Immediate improvement till the dose was reduced then started going backwards again.

Finally got him onto 1/4 tube of gastrogard with sucralfate and is mostly normal. He still goes off his food a bit but i have just been increasing his gg to a 1/3 for a week or so and that settles him down again. Tried Ranitidine and he hated it.

After a long chat with vet he is going to stay on omeprazole and sucralfate indefinitely. His lifestyle and diet are completely ulcer friendly and he hasn't been in work so wouldn't like to comment on his performance.

Good luck with yours.

I have used 1 sachet of omeprazole and 1 sachet of sucralfate to treat a horse that had recurrent ulcers. They would be treated and clear up and as soon as treatment stopped they would come back within a matter of months. (all pain and stress factors addressed) He is a competition horse and in the end he is best managed in this way. I used to order from abler.com but now get them from horseulcertreatment.co.uk

Forgot to add i tried every supplement and type of food on the market and none ever stopped the ulcers coming back. The vet thinks my horse just finds travelling and competing stressful / exciting and while ever in competition needs to be maintained.
