I've narrowed down my research to these 3 to replace the horrendously expensive gastric supplement from my vet. Horse has been scoped and confirmed grade 2/3 and grade 1 ulcers and is currently on gastrogard. Anybody had any experience with any of the above ? :o

My friends horse was transformed by Gastroplus!

She had grade 4 ulcers which were treated with gastroguard, scoped clear, however her behaviour was still very irratic, even though she had done all the usual management changes which indicated hind gut issues. She did the full course of succeed, no change, she also tried equisure. Within weeks of being on gastroplus she was much happier and started changing shape generally. She was only on it for a few months, has now come off it and has stabilised on just good management and Thunderbrooks feed.

Thanks for the info - I will definitely join the fb page. My boy has been cleared for hind gut - would giving him something such as gastroplus that deals with both be detrimental in any way ? Dumb question probably but sometimes you've just gotta ask :)

How has he been cleared for hind gut? There isn't a test for it? (The is a fecal ph test but it's not reliable) Good news though if you don't suspect problems!

No treating the whole system will be beneficial.

My vet did the fecal test and said it was clear - didn't mention doing any other tests for it ! Is it something I should be concerned about ?

Gastroplus really worked wonders for my horse - to be honest I hadn't expected it to work as there are so many supplements out there claiming to solve all problems but I thought it was worth trying it for a short while to see if there was any improvement, I'd read quite a lot online and GP seemed to be well recommended. Towards the end of the first pack I started to notice a slight improvement in her behaviour - less drama rugging and grooming really. Thought I would buy another pack to see how it went over the next month and she just got better and better. I kept her on the full GP for a few months (just to put my own mind at ease that she'd has a very "good dose" of it!!) and then dropped her down to the maintenance product and she stayed brilliant on it. She used to not allow me to groom/touch her sides and would kick out violently if anyone brushed against her by accident - tacking up and rugging was a nightmare, she is naturally a complete stresshead and constantly paced the field and cribbed fences/stable doors, but all of this disappeared. She now settles to graze which I had never seen her do and the cribbing etc doesn't happen anywhere near as much as it used to. I haven't tried the other products so not sure how they would compare, but have been very pleased with this one! x

The fecal test is known to be far from reliable, a lot of vets won't even bother using it, so I would hesitate to assume your horse is definitely ok. Especially as hind gut and fore gut do seem to go hand in hand. There are no other "tests" for hind gut.

Join the fb page I linked. It is very informative and supportive. If you are planning on using a product like gastroplus anyway then any hind gut issues will hopefully be supported anyway :)

Just been reading the fb page for horses with ulcers - its very informative especially regarding the possibility still of hind gut issues. For example his right hock stiffness - seems this is a possible symptom of hind gut, and it seemed to come on around the time we suspected ulcers and he always seems to rest one of his hind legs when standing. Also he trips a lot when schooling in the arena, my RI put it down to him not going forward enough which again is ulcer related. So I'm thinking of getting the GastroPlus for him. Can't believe my vet didn't think that his sore right hock (ulcers that we have detected are also on the right side of his stomach) might not be a symptom of hind gut issues and just went with the results of what seems to be an unreliable test.

Have you had a work up on the right hock? Recent thinking is now that stomach ulcers are secondary to a pain somewhere in the body. However you are also right that it could be showing because of hind gut discomfort. My mare didn't have ulcers, but hind gut issues. She didn't like bending around my left leg or stepping away from it. Within weeks of reviewing her feed and management it dramatically changed.

I would keep reading that fb page and poss look at reviewing any feed/management and give something like gastroplus. Good luck!
