I always thought an ultra sound was like pictures of soft tissue, but today at work I got to ultrasound one of the horses who has a very bad tendon injury.

I basically had to put the gel on his leg (It smells) and then there was a hourglass shaped metal device and one end was a circle which produced a small amount of heat. I had to rub this device over his tendon for 10 minutes.

I know this sounds silly but I had no idea what the ultrasound was doing? The horse has it twice a day for 3 weeks then he will get re assesed by the vet. So what is this doing to his tendon as I always thought the ulyrasound was a way to take pictures, like the kind you get when your pregnant.

'ultra sound waves' come at different frequencies.

From what I can gather, it stimulates the blood flow to the effected area. This will improve the recovery time. But it has to be repeated a few times a day.

The reason the gel smelt is probably because they put essential oils in it, menthol, peppermint, whitch hazel and the likes.

Good luck for the horse.

Ahh ok that makes sense now, he has it done twice a day but this may be increased on tuesday dependign what comes up in the scan.

He's a lovely horse only 4 was just starting to be backed. It was my first time working with him and he's just a big gentle giant! The vet seems to think he will make a full recovery but will be off for about 9 months yet.

I have ultrasound on my back every week at the chiropractors. I think it works by getting to the deeper muscles and therefore stimulates blood flow to the affected area, but not entirely sure!

I never knew ultrasound was so widely used, a bit naive really. The machine we was using looked ancient but was apparently worth £5000 so I was very careful not to break it :)
