Hello, I have found a horse for sale he is a bit of a project as he hasn't had much done in the last 6 months but he has an umbilical hernia When I first enquired I assumed that he had ,had it removed as a youngster but in the last day the lady told us that he still has a lump there ,and that it was never removed.
As some hernias there is a risk of problems later ,Due to me wanting a small pony he would be doing quite allot of jumping ,eventing and pc things, Has anyone herd of it getting bigger or it causing other issues Another problem would be devaluing him although he isn't expensive if he didn't work out would his resale be limited or an issue?

If he was to event etc i would want the op doing. The risk is if he jumps say, a brush fence, catches the hernia & ruptures it... well....thats not good..we're talking the risk of his insides dropping out so to speak :(

We had a mare that had the op, cost us under £600 - keyhole surgery to insert titanium mesh to 'plug' the gap. Never had a problem since & she hunts etc now.

If he was just a happy hacker then i wouldn't be concerned as much.

Most studs will band a UH when the horse is a foal so i drops off but this is not usually possible with a fully grown animal.

Personally i wouldn't buy a horse with an UH - so i think you would have problems re-selling, also i expect your insurance wouldn't cover it rupturing (not 100% sure on this)

Hope this helps :)

Umbilical hernias are usually repaired before the horse reaches maturity. The main risk is that a piece of gut can become strangulated, causing severe abdominal pain and requiring emergency surgery.

Have you actually seen the pony? If you want to pursue this, you need to have a good feel of the hernia, so that you can give an accurate description of the size of it to your vet, he can then give you his opinion and an estimate for the surgery.
