Umbilical hernia

One of our dogs has an umbilical hernia. It was first flagged at a pre collection vet check.
We were told it shouldn’t be a problem. I say that, but this is a dog my daughter bought during lockdown down. I had nothing to do with it and knew nothing about him until he arrived.
Our own vets gave it a good look whilst castrating him ages ago and it’s been checked and said fine every year at vaccination time.
He’s 5
It’s an obvious bump and very pale, the same colour as the skin on his tummy, I often hose his tummy off so it’s seen regularly, it obviously shows up more wet.
Today after a muddy walk I washed him and noticed it’s gone a bit purple looking and is * maybe bigger.
I’ve told daughter he needs a vet visit asap, she is going to send a photo now and call her sister in law who is a small animal vet (not quite qualified)
What’s going on here? Is this bad?

On further examination now dry and with daughter here to hold properly it’s not bigger at all. I think the wet hair made it look bigger but the top is purpley and previously wasn’t

Our spaniel had one but hers was corrected when she was spayed and we never noticed it after that

My daughter was told by the breeders vet who she spoke to on the phone after his check and before collecting him that when he was castrated it could be fixed. But then our own vet said at the time that it was fine and not to worry but that they would keep an eye which they have.

Only in humans eldest had a huge one as a baby, the size of his fist and you could see moving intestines it suddenly cleared up at 12 months.

I had a tiny one you could hardly see that was operated on as they were worried about it pinching/strangulating.

If have had to hand him back did that not freak you out a bit?
I’m amazed they don’t just shove it all back into place straight away!

Poor boy, hope he recovers soon.

Out of interest what was the outcome - has he had to have surgery to correct the hernia and did he develop anymore symptoms? Sorry for the slightly insensitive questions - I also have a dog with a hernia and we're hoping to have the surgery done when he's castrated but that wont be for a few months - I'll also make sure I push to have the hernia sorted rather than left.

Hi Squeak, No that's fine.
No more symptoms, just the colour change. He was 100% normal seeming in himself and in all honesty had the ground been dry and he'd not been washed off I wouldn't have noticed.
Daughter called the vet on Monday morning and they had him straight into theatre.
Yes, In hindsight it would have been better to have had it done anyway when he was younger and having GA anyway, probably a lot cheaper too! They said at the time it was completely un-necessary. I'm not sure if this would have happened at some point anyway or if he maybe damaged it in some way.
