I have had my 14.2 Dales x Pony for 4 months, things are going really well. He has settled in quite well, and we are taking things slowly. One thing that is really bugging me! He goes mad when i try to spray him with fly spray, have tried loads of different ways, did manage to spray his tail yesterday whilst he was eating his haylage, but as soon as i tried his mane, or have tried spraying him he rears and goes mad. Have tried days in a row spraying at a distance to get him used to it but doesnt seem to work....Any suggestions ......??

Be inventive! Start with teeny puffs of spray half a mile away from the stable and gradually bring it nearer and nearer. Or stand in the stable with ned, turn your back on him and diligently spray the wall with plain water. Ignore ned totally. When he doesn't even look up (could take ages) move the spraying closer. I'd defo use plain water to start with coz sometimes it's the horrible smell too. If all else fails, get a fairly wide nozzled sprayer and put dilute apple juice in it. Turn your back to ned but just let him see what you're doing - then spray a squirt into the palm of your hand and offer your hand (NOT the sprayer) to ned. That should get him interested. You can work up to spraying your hand while its right under your ned's nose. When the time is right, dilute even further and accidentally spray a little onto ned. Enjoy! x

Or......use Deosect once a month instead, much cheaper and Royal Vet coll horsey vet told me to use it, its a tiny bottle that is diluted loads and lasts a whole season. wiped on not sprayed, job done. You can get it from online pharmacy too.
