attempting my fist sj competition on saturdayin 15 years(!) - just wondered if i need to plait? quite like to but not sure if i have to? also am i ok to ride in a jacket with a normal white shirt rather than a stock? thanks for any help!

Shirt and tie would be more tha fine for unaffil SJ and no need to plait unless you want too as long as mane tidy! People do turn up looking dreadfully scruffy sometime so I wouldn't worry too much as long as you look smart.! However plenty of people do plait so if you want to, do, as you won't look out of place at all!

Rarely see a horse plaited for SJ so I wouldn't bother.
White shirt is fine but you should wear if tie if not using a stock

Ypu dont need to plat for un affilliated- as long as you are clean and tidy- white shirt is also fine!
You should see the state of some people!

Agree with Tizzy, some people look a right state! As long as you are tidy, then plaits are not required.

i enjoy the getting ready bit so should hopefully be tidy - dont think our jumping style will be tho!

Amen to that! I hate plaiting manes though I like doing the tail.

Don't bother plaiting it's not required. Don't worry about your position etc just get out there & enjoy yourself....... & don't forget to breathe!!!!

thanks for the support - somehow you worry more when you are an adult competing - i would never have cared aged 15!!! its good to know i dont need to ride a perfect round, i am just going for the experiance (and fun!) and seeing how we do. We are doing total beginners and beginners which is a bit feeble really, but got to start somewhere!
