I didn't go (shattered from driving back from Cornwall via Brighton) but Rosie took 3 horses up to sNorfolk today (including my baby boy) and I've just had a phone call from her to let me know how they got on. Not sure what level each one was doing but it's a not too expensive prep for Little Downham I think.
Frodo: She was delighted with a 39 dressage and a clear SJ so on to the XC with high hopes. I've never been, but apparently the water is in and out of a river + riding up and/or down it and today they had to jump a roll-top and step down into the water. Frodo was horrified, stopped dead and R fell off. She got straight back on but he refused point blank to go through, even when another competitor gave him a lead, so she got off and led him through. Then she got back on and he completed the course even though he had to go through some water again later.
She was very pleased with him and so am I - he's very green and he'll get the hang of it in time. She said he seems to be genuinely a bit afraid of water so more schooling and playing needed before he does a BE ODE. Oh, and he was pretty quick round the XC (apart from the faffing) which we didn't really expect. He would have been 4th if he'd gone clear XC - which is nice
Alfie (only done dressage until Rosie was asked to broaden his education): He was 4th after dressage, went double clear and won! His owner was there and is, I gather, very happy.
Bertie: Second after dressage, clear SJ and she didn't push him XC as the ground wasn't brilliant but he ended up 3rd - would have won if he hadn't had time.
So a good day even if R did end up with wet feet and I have to say unaffiliated eventing with accommodating (sp?) officials is a really important and useful part of a young horse's training so thanks to the organisers. Any tips on acclimatising babies to getting their feet wet?
