Hi,

I have not posted much before, but am off to my first competition on Sunday - a couple of small unaffiliated classes at Golden Cross in East Sussex and wanted to some advice!

Firstly - my understanding is that most people dont plait - is that correct?

Do you normally get to walk the course? Do they let you do this between classes?

One of the classes I am entering says 'A7 or 2 phase.' What does this mean exactly?

Do I get set times - or do I just have to wait until I can tell they are jumping my class and then put my name down with the steward once I am ready to jump?

Sorry for all the questions - its been a while since I have been to a competition - and previously I have mainly groomed at low level BE and not SJ.

Hi, I can help you with a couple of questions:

1. Most people don't plait for showjumping (even at higher level)
2. Yes you get to walk the course and usually this is in between classes (though some venues may let you walk in between 2 competitors in the same class if they're very generous!)
3. I'm not entirely sure what A7/2-phase means (never done BSJA so never learnt the terminology)
4. Usually you just put your name down on the board when the class is about to start (or when you're ready to warm-up if there's lots of people). Double check with the secretary though when you arrive.

2 phase means that you jump you inital course of say 8-9 fences, if you are clear you then continue straight away on to the jump off which will be numbers 10-14 ish. If you fault on the first section they will ring the bell and you DO NOT jump the jump off.

1) no sj-ers dont plait, like hardly ever
2) yes they will let you walk the courses between classes
3) A7/two phase means you do your first round and jump off together...and so there will be a course of say 14 fences, and fences 1-9 are the first round and fences 10-14 are in the jump off. if you jump the first 9 clear then you continue on to do 10-14 (jump them clear and fast as it is a jump off) but if you knock one or have a refusal in the fences 1-9 then they will ring the bell and you willnot continue on to fences 10-14

4) and once you have warmed up etc you can put your name down (usually on a white board or blackboard by the entrance to the arena)

A tie or stock will be fine.

I normally put my number down while the class before is still jumping. This will give you an idea when you need to get on and warm up. You really want to put your number down before you start to warm up as you could be ready, go to the collecting ring and there will be 20 in front of you.

Re the stock or tie - I've never worn either at several unaffiliated venues. Just one of those high necked shirts. I've seen lady riders wear them without a stock or tie even at BSJA premier shows. I've aways been able to walk the course and never plaited (pretty rare to see SJ's plaited even at the top levels). Two phase is great - less hanging about. It should be clear when you walk the course where phase 2 starts and it's often higher (ie if I do the 90cm at my local venue phase 2 will be at 1m). Some places you put your number down at the start, others it's just go when you want. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
