Unbalanced horse

My mare is unbalanced, particularly in canter (used to be awful in all paces, but we are getting there!). For us loads of hacking has really helped, esp if you can ride 'up hill and down dale'! Getting a good marching walk out first up and down hills, round corners etc, then moving on to doing this in trot and then take sections in canter (slightly uphill at first will be easier). When we are on a hack she is easier to get moving willingly and supply forwards (without this you are on a hiding to nothing!) so it helps alot - trotting and cantering along and allowing him to find his own balance will help him get the idea - then you can bring it into the school with lots of work getting the trot rythum consistent around circles and serpentines and transitions (within a pace as well as between paces) which should help heaps. He needs to use his back end to propel himself and then find his balance like this - muscles and balance will build in time with the correct work. Loose schooling my mare in a lunge pen has helped too as she has the freedom to find her balance for herself.
hope all that waffle helps!
