As you probably know from my last posts that i have a stallion and a mare. i covered the mare and ended up with a really nice coloured colt, 2 years ago.

I've had a bit in its mouth and started lunging with side reins and roller about 2 months ago, he seems to fall in alot on the circles and not be very balanced. is there any way i can make him more balanced on the circles??

You're lunging a 2 year old in side reins??!!

Let him grow up a bit before you start lunging on circles and worrying about how balanced he is, or you could do irreparable damage to his legs and joints.

You are kidding right?

Echo diggerdog.

If this isn't a wind-up I would recommend you stop lunging him now or else you could well have far more to worry about than him being unbalanced! Lunging is stressful on the joints whatever the horses' age and potential very damaging for such a youngster, even without the added pressure of using side-reins.

I enjoy eating cream cakes, but that doesn't mean that its good for me.

Having accused another forum member of cruelty today, you could come under the same criticism yourself! Lunging a 2yo, especially in side reins is likely to cause him physical harm, which will affect him for the rest of his life.

i don't think im being cruel. its not like i've broken him or anything! I don't do tight circles with him, i've never done tighter than a 20 meter circle.

You're missing the point (deliberately?). Two years of age is too young to be doing any sort of lunging - period - unless of course you WANT to do him permanent damage. Your choice I guess.

So you only want advice if people agree with you? You're on the wrong forum then!

I kind of hope that you are a troll, because your naivety is staggering, as the owner of both a stallion and youngster!

i don't want to permanently damage him!! i have always thought and been told that 2 years of age is fine to lunge a horse, as long as im not planning on breaking him for a while......which i am not!
and i do not have any problems with people disagreeing with me!

If you really don't want to damage him permanently then let him grow up. What's with the tearing rush to get this animal working? Would you rather have a horse with chronic problems which is unusable by the time it's ten or one which stays happy and healthy until it's twenties? IMHO it's a bit of a no brainer really.

Ok I understand what you have all said and THANK YOU for your replys.
I have always been told by my trainer who is a very well respected one, that two years is fine to be lunging. My horse is mentally and pysically a lot stronger than his age and he has a few mental problems which means he causes mayhem if not keep busy.
My family have always started horses in this way and my father has been training horses for years. He really seems to enjoy having something to do .

Could you not long rein him instead?

Lunging is too much pressure on young joints and soft tissues and also is not good for arthritic horses either.
