Unbelievable number of flies...

Just got back from a hack and the flies were horrendous - I imagine that they are worse this year as it it has been so wet and humid. He had been sprayed from head to toe with spray, but made no difference.

However I think I have solved the problem! I snapped off a couple of fronds of bracken and attached them to the head piece of his bridle and 'voila', no flies around his face! He looked ever so comical and was going to take a picture of him in his bracken headress, but sadly he ate it as soon as I got home!!!!

Really helped though.....

They are terrible at the mo,especially this week in the humid weather:( Power phaser fly spray by Leovet. It works...end of. I shan't go on,as have extolled it's virtues on other flyspray threads b4! My boy is sensitive skinned, comes up in big fly bumps &gets upset by them but this spray works:)

My highland is allergic to this. She came out in an awful rash last year.
Will look at the other products people have recommended as we also have bad flies this year :(

I have soaked my 2 in fly spray and there are still millions of flies everywhere. :mad:We have tonnes of horse flies as well, a lot more than I have ever experienced and the horses just keep throwing themselves everywhere to shake them off! They get very miserable and agitated especially around midday.

Well I must be on a different planet! Still no flies in general here in Devon

LOL! Ummm, dunno where in Devon you are hun??? I'm in east devon, and fairly high up at that, and yesterday afternoon/evening the blimmin horse flies just came out in droves; poor horses were just going crazy and I had to go in and put on a long-sleeve top coz they kept pitching on me too.

In the end I gave up spraying and bunged fly-rugs on both horses and then gave them a spritz with Power Phaser.

Last night hacking was horrific when it stopped raining - we were in the woods and I honestly was paying no attention to where we were going at all as I was killing horseflies on poor pony and I. Must have been over 50 I swatted - they were everywhere. I had 5 on one riding boot at one point when I looked down.

Disgusting things to go with the disgusting weather!

I'm in Somerset and my cob lives on the Quantock hills. At lower levels the flies are not too bad, but as soon as we go up on the hills they get really bad. We tend to stick to the lower level hacks during the summer and save riding on the hills for later in the year.

I'm in Essex and the flies/midges here are terrible :( most of our hacking is through woods and with the damp and humidity they are breeding like well flies. Its got to the point that hacking through the woods is a no no, I get bitten and poor G gets so angry and upset

WE NEED SOME PROPER SUNSHINE!................Please.

Mine are using the shelter so the flies must be really bad as they are happy to live outside it in any other weather.

We've got lots of the damn things this year. I even got bitten by one of the pesky horse flies, now Ive got a swollen hand.

The problem is it is very difficult not to breathe in the spray when it is so strong and wafts about in the wind or if you want to get close to the horse! As it says twice do not breathe or inhale the spray and wear face/eye protection.

It made me have the worse headache and sickness ever and my pony's nostrils all wrinkled just from riding beside another horse that was sprayed with it so I am definately not spraying it on my pony I don't want him to have a headache.

It did however seem to be good at keeping the flies off my friends horse and she did not have any side effects from using it.
