Unbelieveable! Riding on roads!

I would rather pass riders without Hi Viz that thank me for slowing down, rather than the vizzed up that dont acknowledge me. It is something that drives me mad when riders dont thank drivers, viz does not mean that manners have to be left at home. I dont personally deck myself out in it, but I dont ride on busy roads, thank god. I am of an age where I feel that I can please myself. I do however wear a hat. Now.

i agree i hate rider that dont thank you when you slow down for them and i dont wear hiv viz either unless it getting close to darkness but then i dont ride on busy roads either

At the end of the day, if someone comes round a bend on a country lane too fast, it's unlikely to matter if there is hi-viz or not. There needs to be a campaign to educate drivers, but alas many drivers will still not slow down, hi-vis or not, as there seem to be a breed of riders these days who find it impossible to even acknowledge that the car is there. I passed a group the other day, all with hi-vis, not a single smile or nod to my careful driving. So maybe there needs to be a campaign to teach a few manners as well!!!

well my therory is that drivers have slowed down for riders and got fed up of not being thanked and given up slowing down for riders, although this wont be for all divers and riders so riders do need educating i personly always thank drivers when they slow down

On more than one occasion I've seen (the same) people hacking on a section of the one way system in Cheltenham with no hi-viz in the morning rush hour

It would be much simpler if there was clear rules etc for riding on the roads, rather like safety belts being obligatory etc.

I know under 14 yrs children have to wear hats on public highways but hi viz are a very sensible option where we live as most of the roads are lanes with trees that take the light so most riders around me do ride with hi viz jackets.

Regarding thanking drivers - I always try and acknowledge drivers with a smile a nod, but often (with my horse) it can sometimes be tricky to thank with a wave to every car that passes as she can be spirited although road safe. It is often difficult to nod/smile etc at the "right" time when the driver is looking at the rider so sometimes drivers just dont know they have been thanked - but I would like to think that the majority of riders are courteous and those that dont thank drivers perhaps arent polite folk the rest of the time!!

Someone once drove passed me, slowed down and seemed a good driver - until they yelled "No need to thank me then!!!" out the window at me. Fair enough if I hadn't thanked them.
They made no effort to look at me and as they shouted, I was 'mid-thank'! My arm would have clearly been seen if they had bothered.
