when do you all start to stable rug your un clipped horse. as the last few morning i've turn me boy out, his coat has looked stary(sp) so i don't know if he is getting cold by night. what do you all think?
Mines had a fleece on at night for a week or so now. She will hopefully be clipped this week, then her stable rugs can come out. I start to rug as soon as temp goes below 10C.
It hasnt been overly cold at night in the last couple of days really.....
It depends on whether you are going to clip this winter and whether you mind his winter coat growing really!!
My mare will have all her coat off when she starts to come in at night, so she hasnt had a rug on since it has been dry, at all. When the temperature drops a bit more or it starts to get wet, they will all come in and she will be clipped and rugged up!
her coat is probably fluffing up to to trap the air for warmth.by rugging you will flatten the coat,so 6 of 1 and half dozen of other.it`s not chilly enough yet IMO but they get colder stood about indoors.
He using his natural mechanism to keep warm by fluffing up the outer layer allowing the under layer to keep warm air close to his body
i've never seen to point of rugging unclipped ponies TBH as the rug prevents their coats acting naturally, therefore actually hindering the pony/horse to keep itself warm.
the worst combinanation for this is a lightweight/summer turnout and an unclipped horse.
he is not going to be clipped but i don't want him to grow a full winter coat as he is going away for breaking the end of october. christmas sparkle ,it was about 8 or 9 c here last night so would you put a lightweight (110g) stable rug on?
I have tried rugging Skye to prevent coat growth as in autumn she shows the pony bit that must be in her breeding and develops a coat that any mountain pony would be proud of, however having tried rugging i am convinced all it does is flatten the hair and makes them look less fluffy rather than actually stop hair growth, i tend not to rug till i clip but that is personal choice, there are native ponies at the yard in over night wearing WB jasper lightweight rugs which i think are 110g and they are ok so i am sure you would be fine, these ponies are also wearing rugged for t/o in the day as well.

What she said
IMO Fleeces are totally pointless for unclipped horses as they prevent the coat from doing its job.
If you think it is cold now then put a lightweight on if you must but it is going to get a lot colder - so unless you want to be putting on 6 rugs in january I would hold off.
thanks silverskye for the reply, he is rugged by day either a lightweight or if it's raining / blowing a gale in his medium weight. so i think i'll try him tonight and if he is too hot, i'll have to think again.
so agree with JM07,i have a ID and though he is getting quite fluffy now, i wont rug him untill he has a full clip, which will be at the end of october,
Our unclipped horses only have rugs on inside if they are wet when they come in, mind you ours are still out at night and hopefully will be until the beginning of November.
