Lol, I'm so glad I've seen this and now know it's not just me!! With me I'm sure it's because I'm sitting on the wrong bits (as it were), as I've had it with a few different horses and saddles. I've been making a real effort to feel my seatbones, which has definitely helped, and have been experimenting with my underwear! I would advise against thongs, boy shorts, and brazilian pants!!!

I had this problem with an ideal saddle I had. I found all the padding in the world didn't help, but sticky bum jods did. Don't have that saddle anymore and have never suffered with it before or since.

So change your saddle and as a short term measure get yourself some sticky bum jods!
 
Take a tip from endurance riders and try padded riding tights. They have padded crotch and seat, as well as knee padding, and no seams to rub. It's not the most flattering look but it is comfortable!

I can't believe I'm about to post this but here goes. I had a chaffing down there on a very specific area which lead to a very sore lump forming

. As you can imagine the lump made it rub even more - it was absolute agony. I highly recommend sudocreme and vaseline

I too have suffered the same, underneath, not at the front, so not caused by tipping frward onto fork.

HM seat saver actually made me worse, I found the only thing to do was to slowly build up my riding time so the skin toughens up. Am suffering now, due to the weather enforcing a long riding break!
I also inspect my jods before I buy them as loads are made with a large centre seam rigt where the problem occurs, some of the manufacturers put binding on this seam too which makes it even worse, so I avoid them like the plague.

I know its been a giggle on here, but when it happens it can make you absolutely miserable and with me usually leads to a bout of thrush as I suffer with that recurring constantly. I'll try ANYTHING to avoid it lol!!!

I believe cyclists have a similar problem (many go 'commando' to minimise seams). They liberally smear chamois cream about their parts to minimise friction. Try asking fo some at your local bike shop.

Ditto. Glad it's not just me! I rode spordically last year and now I'm back into getting Horse fit it's becoming a problem - decent pant and a suitable pair of jodphurs are my new essential. NOT jeans

I have the added problem of serious bruising of the skin over my seat bones. Bad enough that it takes at least 3 or 4 days to heal enough to be able to ride again and it's proper black blue bruising (I've checked

). Sore seat bones = tipping forwards onto said 'front bottom' = chuf chaff = lots of fidgetting then finally getting off and walking

so glad this isn't me! Don't perch forward, but do suffer with my 'undercarriage'! Mine is an ideal too, though am looking at changing it as it isn't very comfortable and I think the seat is too small anyway.
Has anyone found jods/breeches without that tricky seam? Are any made like that?

A lot of cyclists put v thick sanitary pads in their underwear for a long ride. Not particularly pleasant but it's worth considering if you're really struggling.
 
From 22nd March (for a limited period) Lidl will be selling cycle shorts for £5.99. I have bought these from Lidl before and they were good quality - might be worth a trial, cycle shorts are usually quite pricey.
 
We sell a lot of cotton menstrual pads to ladies that ride or cycle - they just fasten in place with a little popper under your pants, but provide an extra comfortable nicely padded cotton layer. Apparently they're much more comfy than disposable sort as they are just cotton on the surface, no chemicals or synthetic materials to chafe the delicate parts.
 
It has been so good reading this thread! I too have suffered dreadfully in the past so it has been lovely to find I am not alone - and I have had a good chuckle too!

What has helped me has definitely been thinking more about sitting on my seat bones (I was a percher on a fork, so to speak) but also, as said above:

1. Big knickers, but chosen carefully for no lacy edges, worn inside out :).
2. Cycle shorts with the gell padding - wonderful! I got mine from Tescos, I think they were £8 so if Lidl are doing them at £5 they're a bargain!

And I so agree it's the horse's walk that does the damage - the bigger the walk, the more the damage (I avoid thoroughbreds like the plague!).

To be different I wear those boy shorts all the time and find them really good to ride in, also ride in my jeans (they are really streatchy tho) and never had a problem, be it hacking or jumping or well anything.

*Boss is now looking at me very strangley as I'm sat giggling to myself!!*
 
I had a similar problem with a couple of saddles i used to have. They both had the same seat size as others i've had but rubbed and it can be the most uncomfortable thing especially when you're on a long hack and know you have a couple of hours until you're back to the yard.
 
I too always wear the stretchy boy style shorts as find them most comfy - though do wear the stretchy lycra type with no centre seam.
 
Yes, whoever designed those boy shorts with a ridiculous seam running right up the middle... probably a man!

i'm soo glad it's not just me - i was complaining about riding in them and front weggies to my riding friends - who all said they are fine for them!! but i find them very very uncomfortable...

The pants are key! They need to be generously cut and NOT have a raised seam on the gusset, preferably no seam at all!

I think the best ones are from primark and are completely seam free. They do them as briefs, high legs, or shorts all with no seams anywhere - so they don't rub! Genius and only about £4 for two or three pairs!

Check your jodhs don't have any nasty seams too - some are really badly designed.

And sit up and back, you should think about sitting on your bum where the pockets of your jeans would be (but don't ride in jeans that would be really sore) tighten your tummy muscle to sort of lift your um foo foo.

My old instructor used to yell lift your Ts!! For the kiddies this was the three Ts Teeth, Tummy and Toes for those of us who were older and of a less sensitive disposition it was the 5 Ts: Toes, Teeth, Tits, Tummy and Tw*t!!! :o :o
 
Oh I so know what you mean! I purchased the most beautiful Kieffer saddle for my last horse. It was my first ever new saddle and was so comfy to sit on - or so I thought....
It rubbed my FB something chronic and if was to go on a long hack, I would be in agony by the time I got home. I tried well padded STs but found they ended up in a wedgy making the rubbing even worse.
I sadly had to part with my lovely saddle :-(
However....
I have now discovered the luxury of my OH's pants! He was horrified to find I had started wearing his 'slips' and after a good telling off, went to Tesco and bought some of my own!
So... I can definitely recommend mens undies! Not boxer shorts, but 'slips' and they stay in place! (whispers - doesn't do much to get OH excited though!)
 
With my last horse I bought a Thorowgood synthetic saddle with a really deep seat, and thought I'd got something wonderful as when I'd tried the saddle initially when it was fitted, it felt soooo comfy, BUT after a few days my little whatsit was complaining loudly and I was getting cystitis.

Perhaps your saddle has a deep seat? Perhaps you need one that isn't so deep which doesn't, emm, press on the vital bit of machinery. I've never tried a Prolite seat-saver or sheepskin, or anything like that, but that might be an idea.

if you want to make sure you are sat on the right part of your anatomy, put both your legs over the front of your saddle (as if you are doing up the girth). What you are then sitting on are your seat bones. You then need to work out how to put your legs back without moving (if you're not used to riding in this position you will find it hard to stay there with your legs in the right place).

If your find your sitting on the wrong bits (which I would guess you are), I would suggest some lunge lessons with a good instructos on a not too bouncy horse!
