Can anyone give me any recommendations on under rugs? I am looking for a rug that can be used as an under layer in cold weather under a variety of different makes of rug (in the stable).

Possibly a stupid question, but can 'liners' be used under different makes of rug. Obviously I know that they won't 'clip in' so may be slightly more unstable, but does anyone do this?

Thanks

I use the amigo liners. I also find that as long as the clips at the back can attach to the fillet string of another make of rug, I have no problems when using it as an under rug. I find them really good as they are really lightweight but keep them warm enough without having to layer too much!

I use the Horseware liners, they are brilliant. They attach via a strap each side on the shoulders and clips that attach to the fillet string metal rings.

So you basically need two metal rings at the shoulder/neck and two at the tail of your existing rugs.

I use Amigo liners. They're compatible with Horseware and Premier Equine rugs because they can be attached to velcro tabs at the base of the neck on these makes. As Hannahgb says, they'll clip onto most fillet strings. However I wouldn't feel comfortable using them on a rug where without the velcro tabs because I've seen another horse get caught up in their liner from slipping.

I use the Amigo liner rugs - I never clip them in even if I use them under other Horseware rugs, and they still don't slip. I've used them under lots of other makes too, and they are brilliant! And if you need to wash them they dry very quickly too, which is handy if you don't have spares!

I just use another turnout underneath. One is not hugely waterproof so that gets used underneath usually!
Never had a problem doing that, tbh I think the liners are pretty expensive for what they do! I just make sure that the underrug has short surcingles.

This. I just use either a light weight stable rug or turnout And keep the surcingles short. If it's really cold but dry the stable rug stays on all the time stable or turnout if it's really wet like right now I just use an old turnout that isn't so waterproof anymore under.

I use an old duvet in the stable as an under rug in the winter if it is going to get really cold. I will pop it on, cross the front corners over around the chest and pop a surcingle on to keep it in place, then I just put the desired stable rug over the top. It never moves and keeps my fully clipped out mare lovely and toasty during the freezing evenings.
Otherwise, I just put another stable rug on underneath.

Duvet's as I find they stay put better than a liner which doesn't clip in. If you have amigo rugs they attach on though which are good

I love the horseware liners, I use them all winter & I rarely do the front Velcro tabs up as usually forget. I always put the back clips on,never had any problems with slipping. They're really nice & light, wash well & dry quickly. I've used them recently under a non horseware rug & stayed in place just as well.

I put one on under a Weatherbeeta rug. It worked well....until
It slipped and ended up completely trashed :(
I love Mark Todd under rugs but you do need to alter the neck fastening to keep them done up. I like the rest of the rug so much I don't mind paying my rug lady to do that!

Those of you that have had under-rugs slip, did the under-rugs have their own cross surcingles or not? I've never had one slip at all, but all mine have their own cross-surcingles, but I have seen some liner/under-rugs that don't and I would think they are more prone to slipping unless they are clipped into the top rug.

I used Amigo insulator rugs under everything - they're fab. They are silky so they don't rub shoulders and they fit in the washing machine and dry super fast. I don't attach them and they have never slipped :) Can't praise them more highly.

I've got a Rambo one and a fal one. The fal one comes with detachable surcingles, and an extra fillet string. I took the extra one off and just clip one to both rugs and I also took the surcingles off and it does not move. However it's a bit big for the rug it came with and gets wet at the edges which is annoying (it is meant to go with this rug).

The Rambo attaches at the front and the back it doesn't have surcingles and does not move, but if I was being picky, the front loops rub her hair off. This one however fits properly under the rug which is good.

I prefer no surcingles on the under rug but I also have used turnouts as under rugs and that works ok too.

I have an old stable rug that I shortened depth-wise. Gives extra warmth over the back where it's needed but not too much bulk round the elbows. It has its own front buckle and crossover surcingles so doesn't need to be attached to the outer rug. (tis useful on its own too to keep the back warm without overheating the rest of the horse - it's been shortened to reach to just above the elbows)
