Underrugs, layers, stable rugs etc!

Know this is probably really a NL question but they scare me!

Just wondering what you guys do about layering rugs - as my youngster finally destroyed his under rug last week :(

In the worst of the cold weather the boys both had their MW stable rugs under heavy turnouts and were perfect temperature wise, but that is a bit much for them on the average chilly night (say the nights where it hovers just around/below freezing!). So they both had (or had in one case - grrr) the horseware liners, but my issue with these is their ones had simply a single velcro fastening at the front. They also had clips to attach to fillet string loops. But the velcro kept coming undone and one day I found my arab with his whole under rug trailing behind him on the floor so stopped using the clips - at least that way of velcro undid whole rug came off rather than still being attached at the back!! Anywho someone else turned them out last week and roo ended up trampling his into shreds.

So I need to replace it but what I'm wondering is do people tend to use/buy specific under rugs? Or just light stable rugs? Personal bug bear is fleeces under rugs as i find they almost all rub/slip back so would rather something more rigid. Thoughts? Anyone got any derby house rugs? Any good?

DISCLAIMER: This isn't meant to be post about how many layers etc your horse wears, fwiw mine are both pretty 'warm' horses and never wear more than 250g stable and 400g turnout even when it was -10, fully appreciate all are different and lets not get into that debate ;)
 
Amigo ones are good. We use them as general rugs when not too cold!

Also premier equine ones have some under rugs on sale. Just ordered one of these - not sure what they are like however!

Also just got some mark todd deluxe fleeces - which haven't slipped back at all!
 
Are those the MT fleeces with the sherpa woolly bit around the neck? Love those, thats the only one I use as an under rug ever! Did you get in sle?
Amigo LW stable? Will have a look and also at prem equine sale, good idea!
 
Mark Todd also do under rugs, which have neck covers fastened by velcro, and the front is two metal clips (not sure what type they are called, but the ones you twist together?) which are brilliant and do not move..
 
must admit i use the horseware ones and havent had a problem. Could also use a thermatex type they shouldnt rub
 
I've got those cheap Amigo l/w stable rugs which I use as an under rug or the Mark Todd under rugs. I then have a m/w stable rug on top. When we're down around the -17C mark (which seems to be a bit too frequent for my liking!) I stick a woollen Newmarket rug between the under rug and the stable rug.
 
I just have 2 cheap master 200g stable rugs that I use as under rugs or spring time rugs. They do the job just fine, better than liners and one is still going strong after 4 years use. They dont rub shoulders either. I also like the fit and lightness of the amigo rugs but as my lw amigo only lasted 1 season before the leg strap came off I'm a bit wary about their destructability!
If you get a full neck underrug watch there isn't a really hard seam around the neckline as a lot seem too and I can't imagine that to be very comfortable around the withers :)
 
I use the Premier Equine ones and also have got the Horseware Duo Liners and they are both brilliant, easy to wash and quick to dry so can keep nice fresh smelling layers on the hroses.

They have the tabs at the front to attach to the individual rugs but they will stay put without attaching them so would fit any rugs.

With the choice of thickness you really can just change as per the weather.

See I found the horseware ones don't stay put under non-horseware rugs, they come right off if the velcro comes undone which mine seem adept at! Just tried PE and all sold out of my sizes :(
Will have a look at the MT underrugs, agree re the hard seam, I tend to fold necks back overnight anyway as mine both seem to get very itchy if wrapped up to the ears 24/7.
Def needs to be buckles/clips in front rather than only velcro, I think my boys might be quite active! And would like to be able to use in field.
So looks like either LW stable (masta, amigo) or different brand of underrug.
Anyone any ideas what makes an under rug specific to being under? Ie is it just that they tend to be a less durable outer fabric?
 
One of mine has a wool day rug on under his Amigo t/o & it is brilliant. I'm not a fan of fleeces as under rugs either as they are too stretchy. When the temp plummeted he got a Thermatex on between the 2.

One has a cheapie Masta stable rug under his t/o (from Equestrian Clearence)

The other has an Amigo Insulator under a lw t/o.

I really like the Amigo insulators.

However they are unclipped so far & I have ordered Premier Equine 450gms to use once clipped.
 
Mine has a light weight stable rug under his premier equine light weight turnout (he is a hot horse and sweats in any more) I use any nylon lined stable rug as I think these tend to rub less, have never had any problems with slipping even though he loves to roll. Currently using the Swish Equestrian LW stable rub which was cheap as chips at £19.99 I think but is great, very deep and washes beautifully even in a normal washer.

I too found that the liner on the horsewear rugs didn't last 10 minutes with my last horse (gave the rug away with him) and he was usually very careful with his rugs, I'm sure it's the weak front closure as never had it with any other rugs.
 
I use a full neck masta under rug and on colder days he has a thin unknown brand stable rug, all under his PE 450g, (as you have met him ecrozier, you see what a skinny creature he is) he is fully clipped and out for minimum of 8hrs daily.

I use the Masta Light rugs underneath when its cold and have a collection of them for my horses.

I really like my Masta Quiltmasta Light (about 115g) which has an attached neck so you can leave it up or down depending on the outside temperature. Its great for changable weather and always stays put under various rugs, whether turnout or stable. Easy to use on its own or as an under rug.

Also I can put it in my washing machine to freshen it up and it comes out just as good as from professional cleaners. Nice for them to have something clean next to their skin in this long cold winter.
 
For me it depends on what the rug is made from. I like the outer rug to have nylon lining rather than cotton as they slide and stay in place. I find with the cotton lined rugs its hard to get the rugs to sit properly on the horse and so they are more likely to pull. I also like proper under rugs rather than normal rugs as they dont have the tough heavy outer and so there is less weight on the horses back and also less straps.

At the minute I am using a lightweight stable rug with a shiny outer that I can bung in the washing machine if it gets dirty. Then a cotton duevt style under rug, either the horsewear quilt or the weatherbeeta under rug, then a turnout on top. The only heavy rug is the turnout with the tough outer and she is toasty warm.
 
I have always adhered to the school of 'layer them up to the eyeballs'. However I bought Fugs a heavyweight full-neck turnout rug from Swish and it's all he's had on all winter, day and night, down to -16 on several occasions. I can't really believe that he's warm enough but I check assiduously and he is. He goes out in it too and it's saving me hours a week!
 
rambo underblanket!! has surcingle on chest so doesnt go anywhere!!! and u can get 2 weights, fairly cheap and good quality!! so would do your job!!! :)
 
Ours dont spend huge amount of time in fields through winter, so we have a collection of Rambo Plus, Rambo Duo (with various liners and never had a problem) and fals all of various ages but generally 400gm upwards.

We have a couple that live out and are only in mediumweight rugs but they have full coats and adlib haylage, get checked once a day but we arnt to precious about those living out as long as they arnt shivering and toast racks.

Horsewear do a really good priced "under rug" with and without the neck, that doesnt move at all, but I think it is 300gm. We also use the Mark todd 150gm, good tough rugs, and derby house and jhl do a cheaper option just the same depepnding on budget. We have a good collection of amigo insulators as well and they are very good and fit well.

Im not a fan of premier equine rugs. Our horses have trashed everyone, except for one- that we sent back as it caused a nasty rub on the neck that meant a huge vet bill and time off work
 
Old faithful Shires PonyWarma's and Snuggy Jams underneath for my girls - one is a hot pony and the other terribly cold, so they have different things ontop!
 
Mine always wears a Derby house fleece under his other rugs. It fits him perfectly and I got it last year for about a £10 in the sale! It's very good quality, especially for the price. I really must get another...

ETS - They're in the sale now for £12.99!!

Can't rate JHL (Jumpers Horse Line) Rugs enough, they are just amazing!!!

All my heavier rugs are from them, and they last SO well. They are also the best fitting rugs i've found - the necks are just brilliant (big enough unlike some rugs, but dont fall down at all) and they are just lovely :p Also v reasonably priced imo!
 
i stick 2 turnout combis on mine. i find the combi rug under another combi rug doesnt rub.
when it was v cold they had 2 HW 400gs on plus leg wraps on night and turnout chaps in the day. fully clipped.
