Know this is probably really a NL question but they scare me!
Just wondering what you guys do about layering rugs - as my youngster finally destroyed his under rug last week
In the worst of the cold weather the boys both had their MW stable rugs under heavy turnouts and were perfect temperature wise, but that is a bit much for them on the average chilly night (say the nights where it hovers just around/below freezing!). So they both had (or had in one case - grrr) the horseware liners, but my issue with these is their ones had simply a single velcro fastening at the front. They also had clips to attach to fillet string loops. But the velcro kept coming undone and one day I found my arab with his whole under rug trailing behind him on the floor so stopped using the clips - at least that way of velcro undid whole rug came off rather than still being attached at the back!! Anywho someone else turned them out last week and roo ended up trampling his into shreds.
So I need to replace it but what I'm wondering is do people tend to use/buy specific under rugs? Or just light stable rugs? Personal bug bear is fleeces under rugs as i find they almost all rub/slip back so would rather something more rigid. Thoughts? Anyone got any derby house rugs? Any good?
DISCLAIMER: This isn't meant to be post about how many layers etc your horse wears, fwiw mine are both pretty 'warm' horses and never wear more than 250g stable and 400g turnout even when it was -10, fully appreciate all are different and lets not get into that debate
