Hi guys , just got a15.3 5 year old tb . Quite underweight , trying to work out a good diet for him . I was thinking:

Speedi-beet or calm and condition?
Alfa a oil
D&h build up mix
Ad lib haylage

Any opinions ?

Morning! I'd get some advice from one of the feed companies. Is he in work? When I got my TB he was extremely poor and couldn't be worked for several months. Spillers conditioning cubes, alpha a oil, pink powder + speedibeet split into 3 feeds a day and adlib hay worked wonders for him. Once he'd got the condition back on, its been easy to maintain his weight with adlib hay, and 2 small feeds of hi fibre cubes, alpha a + speedibeet, so not expensive to feed now!

We had a yard visit from Allen & Page... Like Kirsty, ours was in too bad a shape to do anything when he arrived...

2:1 Calm & Condition with Fast Fibre, linseed oil, ad lib haylage, good grass (it was early in the year), and wormed him...

:)

I had the same with mine, he's on 2 meals a day off baileys no 4, alfa a oil and sugar beet with micro linseed he's picked up but would like a bit more coverage over the ribs. I try to stay clear off mixes due to high starch levels and don't like feeding cereal.

Mine's 15.2, 7, came out of racing very recently.

Poor and very ribby on arrival. Currently worked 4-5 times a week. Introduced canter at the weekend.

Fig is fed winergy conditioning mix, northern crop driers grass nuts (the high protein ones), and seaweed granules to make him fat and shiny! He gets 1 scoop of mix in the morning. Then 1 1/2 scoop mix + soaked grass nuts (roughly 2 large handfuls unsoaked) + seaweed (+suppleaze gold) in the evening. He gets ad lib haylage and is out in the field roughly 7-3 every day.

If you browse my recent posts, you'll find the first and most recent pics of him - can really see the difference :)

My older TB drops weight very easily but I put him on Pure feeds this year and he has put on loads of weight!
he has 2 scoops of Pure condition split into 2 feeds per day and is eventing fit and looking very well, he also has ad lib hay :)

My TB lost a fair amount of weight recently. To put it back on I fed

2 scoops of fast fibre
2 scoops of speedibeet
2 scoops of crushed oats
250ml soyal oil
2 mugs of micronised linseed
Plus pro hoof supplement

That split into two feeds a day and ad lib haylage. Took a couple of weeks and he's looking lovely again now, and very shiny!

I prefer low sugar/starch and high fibre diets, as that is what horses have evolved to eat. For that reason I would chose speedibeet over sugar beet.

My mums skinny ex-racer has:-

1 1/4 stubs scoop spillers conditioning cubes
1/2 scoop alfa a
Carron oil
Probiotic supplement

X 2 per day.

He also has a tub trug full of hifi lite with his hay to get some fibre into him as he's quite a picky eater.

He's doing really well on this and is very calm, he's put on a lot of condition :).

Provided he is warm enough you will probably start to see a big difference on the haylage alone.
Feedwise, my hard to keep weigh tb is on
Baileys No4
Alpha A Oil
Sugarbeet
and with the adlib hay has not lost any weight this year.
