Undescended testicle worries.

Here is my Irish cob colt, he is nearly 2 and has one undescended testicle. The vet has been out twice since I’ve had him to have a good feel and has said it’s no where to be found. He said with some colts you can just feel the tip of it and that’s enough to know it’s on it’s way but he can’t feel anything. I’m just a bit worried because he’s taken a liking to a mare in a field adjacent to where he is and he’s not been eating as much and will call over the fence to her all day forgetting and grazing, Leading him is like leading a 20st toddler to open his present at Christmas! He’s so full of it. He is lovely and not much trouble just ‘coltish’ so it takes two of us to bring him up from the field (I live on a bridal way so I don’t want to risk a rider coming as I’m leading him up and him getting excited without an extra pair of hands) Anyway the vet said I have two options; wait until he’s 3 because most have come down by then or have the bigger operation in March before the fly’s start. What would you do?

They definitely don't always come down and if he is getting hard to handle now he will be a lot worse in a year and possibly get out and cover a mare.
I had one done at rising three. I was lucky, the vet rolled him onto his back and fished around for ages before eventually locating the missing testicle. However the bruising was extensive and it took him quite a long time to fully recover. I wouldn't wait.

get the op done you might be lucky and its just behind the other but even with one he will get colty. It can be expensive I had one done at vets school which was significantly cheaper but is was a long time ago so don't know if the students still do it

thats exactly the reason everyone seems to think I’m being selfish wanting to have the op done in March. They keep reminding me how much discomfort he’ll be in but who’s to say that won’t be the case when he’s 3 and it still may not have come down. I think I’ll bite the bullet and book him in for March. Thank you for your reply, you’ve been there and know. I guess it’s a case of getting it over and done with. Xx

I know it’s more expensive the price isn’t the issue, its whether the discomfort of a bigger operation and more risks is worth it. Seems everyone so far has gone for the op. I’ll have to get him booked in xx

Has the vet tried sedating him and having a feel?
Sometimes it can come down under sedation and of not it at least means the vet can have a really good feel for it without the colt objecting.

he hasn’t sedated him. I did read that once they are sedated and they relax it can come down. The vet was able to have a good feel around, Alfred didn’t object. I think I’ll have to just go for it and get it over and done with x
