I'm not sure AA has done anything particularly wrong, it's well known the area where OP is. That said if OP is feeling particularly sensitive over it, maybe a less inflammatory and more productive way of dealing with it would be a polite/friendly PM to request the edit. But the OP is free to post how they wish obviously

If he was mine then I would boot both fronts with a boot such as trails, cavallos type boots and leave them on. I would b
e looking at the difference in him walking on concrete etc. Probably padding the boots.

I would leave him booted 24/7 for a while and see what difference it made.


I would also stop the bute and see what difference that made. I have never given bute for an abscess.

There is also the question of winter laminitis. It has been cold for some this winter especially a horse in a field and these past few nights have been very frozen down here.


There is also the question of cushings.

I had a horse that had a pretty simple stone bruise and it took weeks going from lame to sound and back again. I have had an abscess that took 3 months and then we only knew when he came sound and there was the tell tale line across the wall. That was after x rays, one farrier and 2 horse vets who couldn't find anything in the foot.

I'm not sure where you are in relation to Mark Johnson. It could be worth paying him travel exp. to come out for a consultation re the foot.

I wouldn’t rule-out a stubborn grumbling abscess either. My gelding had a spate of them years ago and generally they’d form fast, dog-lame for 1 day, poultice-burst next 2 days, and he’d recover fine. But one he had presented oddly, on/off mild lameness for 3 weeks, i was then wondering if he pulled something, then all i saw was a back of frog/heel sore hole, where it had tracked.
He had access during the day to some very cool wet soil grass and soft mud grazing areas, and with abscesses being hot inflamed painful, he would come in not lame as the cold ‘poultice’ of the damp grazing soil and cold mud areas soil reduced inflammation. But after a night on dry bed/yard, (dry turn out so he’s moving not stabled), he would show more lame. The heat had built-up again within the hoof. Back out on cold mud/wet grass he’s come in less lame cycle.

Larry was in cold wet mud too at the retirement yard, so that could have had an anti-inflammatory cooling pain-relieving effect.

Birker, when you get the chance, if you could scrub wash the hoof to remove all debris, dry with towel so wet glare doesnt distort pic viewing, and take a straight looking down at the hoof pic, like you’ve already posted, aswell as a pic looking across the sole plane to show the height of frog/sole/wall. A washed hoof pic should help give a clearer idea of sole/bars/wall/frog condition.

Well sorry to hear that Marmalade and SC.

But all horses are individuals and if Lari can't be helped then I will of course make the right decision for him as I did for Bailey. But at this stage it could be something very simple and he's had a huge change of circumstances so I'm not going to catastrophise or write him off just yet.

Looking on maps the area AA mentioned is pretty big so I wouldnt worry that it is outing, I imagine there are a fair few stables in that area.

OK no problem. Thanks. I put the flash on as it was a bit dark, the lights don't seem as bright as they did before and I can see it makes it harder to see.

Doesn't matter it was deliberately provocative and outing as you're well aware. Same as the photo on my screenshot of my office which was taken down on my request by admin, the air jacket incident with the company name being outed, the credit card with my name on being exposed, I could go on. But I will just get gaslit so no point.

I've got more important things in life to worry about right now with some very real health concerns with both partner and Mum who I've literally just come back from the care home after I've received some devastating news about her and I'm beyond caring about this forum. They take precedence over everything and anything even Lari.

I'm going to leave this here where it belongs. Dead and buried.

I mean this in the nicest way but I would recommend a step back from here, B. Every time you post something it ends up like this and it's not nice for anyone, especially you. You seem very heavily reliant on people on HHO, do you have a community or some friends you could go to for advice instead? As you do seem to take things very personally here and appear quite attached and dependent on the forum. If things are so bad personally, get off of the internet and do things in real life, make changes, spend time with loved ones and let go of HHO.

OP - you readily put yourself out there asking for advice and opinions and from what I can tell people are very generous with their time and goodwill in responding. However, almost every time threads descend into chaos when it isn’t what you want to hear. Then you get defensive. I’m very sorry to hear about your mum but the cynical on here will question when you have had time to visit her care home today when you’ve been posting pretty constantly all afternoon (sorry if that sounds unkind but it was my first thought when I read your latest reply).

If it were me and if I genuinely felt as under fire as you seem to I would be taking a step back from posting so much online and instead asking questions of my “real life” friends, fellow liveries, vets, professionals etc.

Because you’ve shared it. Your outburst at AA was uncalled for and you really need to stop and think before exploding at people. I often wonder this, there are people who claim to have high power jobs and as well as having horses to look after or run yards full of horses, compete at a level above us mere mortals whilst having a full time job which includes out of hours call outs yet seem to find massive amounts of time to post on and interact on the internet.

As for me, I'm currently a lady of leisure (that will have to change soon, though) with one old horse I do BA with and I have an aversion to housework (much to my husband's chagrin). The most time I spent on here was when I was stuck at home with small children. When I've been busier with horses and/or work, I hardly visited this forum yet I wouldn't say I've been as busy as some of the folks on here claim to be.

It’s a shame this thread has descended in to debate. There has been some really good advice given particularly regarding the X-ray comparisons.

I’ve never known AA to have anything other than exemplary manners and etiquette, she has a top quality knowledge of equine professionals and I am sure the recommendation she provided far outweighs any debate about whether you’ve been outed especially since you have given more specific information about your location previously.

I hope you find some answers soon but absolutely without doubt you need a fresh set of eyes on those hooves.

I was thinking about this myself but then again that was all because of home problems as well. Like nobody else has those.

I'm not sure I'd be happy with this area here B. That channel looks like it narrows and also looks like it's forcing the joint apart further back. I'm no expert at xrays though. Ludo and Charlie below for comparison I'm sorry Lari is continuing to cause you worries.

FWIW that rad is a slightly off view so it’s not comparable, it’s not shot straight through the joint space. You can see that from the outline of the other joints.

I still find it strange that the vet's so adamant it's not the cause. It seems pretty well known that some horses can be sound with what look like big changes and others lame with what look like tiny ones. But, as I said first of all, I'm no expert on x rays.

I hope it's an abscess and easy to treat, but if so then I also think that several people's advice to test for Cushings should be acted upon.
