Sorry I have posted this twice, I also put it in general section for volume of responses...

OK, so I had the physio out last night and he noticed Buddy's pelvis is slightly uneven - the left side is slightly lower (muscular 1/4 inch, bone 2mm). He recommended putting a 2mm thicker shoe on the left hind to bring the pelvis up and help to build the muscle evenly.

I just wondered whether anyone had experience of this or whether they knew about it and can offer advice?

The reason it is lower is probably from doing the splits in the field a few years ago (long before I had him), as the left hip is further forward, and it is this that is causing the drop.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Photo is from when I first bought him, 4 months ago - presumed that i was where he had been worked harder on one side.

My boy has this problem. Personally I took his shoes off, and he has become more even from behind. That combined with regular physio, and more work on the weaker rein to get the musculature to even out.

I also have this problem (well, my horse does!). Apparently it could happen as a result of an old fracture but some horses are just born with it. My exracehorse developed it from racing round one way for seven years!

His physio gave me stretches to do where you rest your left hand on his withers and use your right hand to push up and against the lower side of the pelvis to 'pop' it back in. You have to put pressure against and upwards for one minute. Then you pick up the hind leg on that side and rotate it clockwise and anticlockwise six times. Do this every day.

Also, you can do cavalletis which are raised at opposite ends.

I'm quite interested in the shoeing bit, I might ask my farrier! Although I would probably be wary of just changing his shoes suddenly because his tendons etc have got used to working in that way and it might put a sudden strain on them.

really you need to get an osteopath to come and look at his pelvis, personally i don;t think blocking up with a shoe is great since it is only dealing with the symptom not the cause. he need his pelvis adjusting as i suspect it has rotacted hence why it is forward and lower on the left or perhaps back and high on the right!! can't tell without a phys exam of the tissues around etc unless you remember the left being sore/inflamed at the time etc. and from the pic the muscles look more under tension on the left. the soft tissues need to be slowly released combined with gentle adjustment of the pelvis, it will take time but should come right witht the right treatment.

i had same problem. i had a mctimoey lady out who did her magic. she also advise me what exercises to do so the muscles even back out for £35 she was great

Is it causing him problems? Is his movement greatly affected? Lots of horses pelvis's are slightly out with no problems at all??

I would say the shoe thing is a no no and re-iterate what Jeff3 says at the end of his post. It would make more sense to use exercises and stretches to help release any tension and even up the muscles. XX
