So, I went to muck out Ned as usual today, put his ice pack on and was going to leave, when I noticed one of the very fat mares was pacing up and down the field. I asked one of the ladies there if she thought the mare might be pregnant, as her hips were quite skinny, but she had an unusually large belly!
Lady said she had the same concerns, but owners (it's a loan pony) said she couldn't be.
I was even going to take a few sneaky pictures, put them on here and ask you guys!

Not 2hrs after I got home from Ned, the same lady calls me up and says "Penny has just given birth!!!"
Well, I rush over as fast as I could and was greeted by this adorable thing!!

NOTE: She's now been moved to a safer field. That electric fence was not on!

Just watched the video, AWWWW wobbling around, love how she almost made it to the teats, it's like trying to get a drunk person up the stairs!

Hahaha!! That's so true XD bless her, she fell over once, but took it all in her stride :D will post that video later! I'm off to work, ho hum! I wanted to stay and look at foaly some more :(

Hopefully her owners (loaners) are going to move them to a stable, and have had the vet to check the mare.

Foal is very down on it's pasterns, and will most likely need restricting for a few days.

Also, has she been seen to suckle?

Foals gorgeous and looks perfect to me. I've bred hunters and eventers and they were sometimes down like that, came right within 2 or 3 days, its quite normal. Mare looks like a great mum too, I doubt its her first foal, she looks to know exactly what to do.

Very cute. Good mare! That's hardly her first foal. Little thing has a fighting chance with a dam like that. It's amazing how well they do with no specialist feeding/intervention. Cob mares IMO have much healthier foals that way in my experience.
It's a dote. Welcome to the world little wobbly one!
Re the pasterns, they'll come right in a couple of days. No need to put in, just leave to own devices, unless they're out in a massive field and dam is a speed freak but it does not look like that so good luck little one!

This exactly! I hope a vet has been to see them and I would second finding a box for them to restrict for a few days. This is not the first time the foal has been up as it's dry and shouldn't really be quite that wobbly. I also hope it's had a good long drink.

Try posting in Breeding OP - there are many experienced people in there that I'm sure would concur. I'm also sure that there are people on here who have had foals that turned out just fine without these precautions, but there are many, many more who have heartbreaking outcomes for carefully planned foals let alone surprises, so it's best to be cautious.

As both posts above. Hope someone with experience of mares and foals has been called.

I must be hormonal because I just bawled and bawled!

Lovely, please let us know how babe gets on and what her name is when she has one?

At work so being brief. She's not my baby (mores the pity!) But I will pass on info. No idea what plans are as far as care goes, but there's an experienced horseman with a few experienced liveries on hand. Will update with progress tomorrow

What a shocker!!!

Although very very cute photos. Hope mum n foal continue to do well xx
