Been on box rest for a month, nothing shown up on X-rays, seen by the vet and farrier and we are none the wiser! Just very sore on the outside of the hoof, been told to kerp him in for another week and see if theres any improvent but where do I go from here?!

Shod, no raised pulse, there was more heat in that hoof and sensitive to hoof testers, thought it was bruising but should be showing more improvement by now. Eating and acting as normal. X-rays didn't show up anything to give an explanation...

Definitely not an abscess, he was nerve blocked and the problem area is in the outside of the hoof, vet asked the farrier to dig behind the hoof wall to see if anything was there that might be causing it but nothing was found :/

How lame is the horse and how long has this been going on?
Why did the Vet go for box rest over field rest?
Are the shoes still on?

If it is something like a strain or tear in the lateral impar ligament it can go on for a couple of months before settling - and be good one day and bad the next.

Did anything show up on the x-rays at all

He is 2/10ths lame in a straight line and 3 on the lunge.
He went lame 4 weeks ago, box rested for a week then appeared 98% sound so was turned out and a few days later he was more lame. So he's been on box rest for 2/3 weeks. Shoes are on, did have a poutice at the beginning and then a pad to protect the sole but that was taken off yesterday.
X-rays didn't show anything significant.

Well he became sounder after a week of box rest, was turned out for a few days, went more lame, backmon box rest, and has been on box rest for about 2-3 weeks and not really improved in that time. So I'm wondering if the original lameness was just a strain or bruise, then this second lameness is something unrelated?

Might be worth having a scan on it?

Or get the thermal imaging people out? The will show hot spots and I think a few people on here have used them.

Hi there, I am really interested in your post as have a similar issue with my horse and unexplained hoof pain. Can someone help me with a contact for the thermal imaging people?? Can I get them myself or do I need vet referral? How much roughly? Sorry to hijack. Many thanks

I was just wondering how your horse is now Jazz2984 as I have a similar problem with my horse, and wondered if you got to the bottom of it and found out what the problem was.

Me too. Nerve blocked to foot. Reactive to hoof testers. No abscess. X rays showed nothing. Waiting on an MRI now. Meanwhile on box rest. He was on field rest when first lame and appeared to improve and then went very very lame day before he was booked in for a full work up.
