I have just purchased a little mare who is arriving on Sunday, almost totally unhanded.

I am planning on quarantine for 7 days when she first arrives as I have a very elderly pony who I wouldn't want to risk catching anything, however others on are yard seem to think im being over dramatic and this is necessary.

What would you do... quarantine or not?

I would certainly consider a form of quarantine, if nothing else it will give you a week to start handling her, get her wormed, start jabs if you want to, probably think about feet being done if possible before turning her out, she will probably be healthy but if she isn't it means the old pony has a better chance of avoiding picking something up.

I don't quarantine if I know where they are coming from but do take care when introducing new ones and would prefer to do that than deal with issues afterwards.

It sounds entirely sensible on both an infectious disease front and a handling front.

You turn a ferel pony loose and you might not get a hand on it again for weeks. Take the period of confinement to do routine MOT stuff and basic handling. You might even need a fortnight.
