I went to work for eventer after college. Loved it, but was skint, tired, missed other areas of my life.
Just finishing uni degree now and got a job lined up, im lucky, but after long and careful consideration, I think I want money. Then I can afford horses, lorries, competitions, bling for my pony, nice tack, cars, holidays, shopping :D Im a brat and cant live without money :)

Good organisation and time management skills = enough time for the horses. Sarah Jane on HHO is a prime example.

Go to uni, I dropped out to work with horses as thought I hated it and loved horses. A couple of years later I regret it massivley! Having any degree at all can still get you a better job (even if it has nothing to do with the subject you recieved your degree in). Then with money you can enjoy your horses rather then potentially resent them or not enjoy it as much as you are surrounded by them, constantly knackered and still have no money to buy your own horses nice things!

i choose miserable millionaire. Ive been seriously seriously skint and that didnt make me happy either, now Im ready to try being a millionaire, thanks ;)

Ive worked with horses, great, lovely, got paid a pittance. Left to get a job that paid actual money, and I can spend it all on my own horses :D

i cant decide what to do with my life either, as theres no career that would pay me enough to have my own horse that i want to do, so im going to work in racing for a year or two so itll give me more time to decide on a proper career, then go after that career and eventually earn a proper living to get my own horse :)

I'd also advise you to go to uni.

I started doing a business studies degree after school but after a year decided it wasn't for me. After a year working in a job I wouldn't want to stay in for ever I studied horses at college and now work with horses as I wanted to do some thing I enjoy. I really enjoy my job and it isn't that badly paid for a horse job but now i'm a bit older money comes a bit more important! I would love to go back to uni to study something else but as I can't guarantee a job at the end of it I can't justify it financially. Also working with horses and having your own horse is difficult, especially during the winter.

So I would say go to uni now and get a qualification which you can get a good job and pay for a horse. You could always do some part time work with horses whilst your at uni or do your stages so you have something else to fall back on.

But failing that go with what you want as we all have to make our own mistakes in life to learn from them.

Good luck with whatever you decide as it doesn't get any easier!

Go to uni!!
You will be there for 3/4 years and the job Market will pick up. You will also have a better chance of getting a decent, well paid job with a degree and you can always work with horses if you change your mind.
I would rather a decent job and be able to afford a nice horse than be working all hours for a pittance looking after other peoples horses with no time or money for your own.
You don't neccessarily have to get a desk job either, you can go into anything.

Also you will have the time of your life at uni, it will be the best 4 years you will ever have :).

i would do the uni route then you have a back up...........................and if you so wish later on you can do the horse route. but friends of mine have found it very difficult when they have graduated with an equine degree to transfer into a job that is not horsey.
i would suggest your back up is in a degree that you would find interesting and also would give you flexability in the job market and transferable skills, also find relative work experience for you degree in the holidays and if your uni has a placement year jump at the chance. you might see it as an extra year but the employer will see it as relevant experience and job hunting is easier (well a bit)

Hmm, I guess the sensible option would be to go to uni.

But, I had a job grooming for an Olympic team member which I left to go to uni. Two degrees later I am in a job that pays no more than a horsey job, in fact I am worse off now than I was being a working pupil on the professional yard.... Perhaps I was lucky in the yard I worked on and have been unlucky since getting my degrees, but I would go with your heart.

Saying that I now have a gorgeous daughter and have found a lovely yard to keep my horse at so can't complain. But uni certainly didn't make me millions and I am back skint but happy with my horse :)

Personally I'm not sure I would spend the money to go to Uni UNLESS you are thinking of a career in medicine / science /teaching (basically something you have to have a degree for). I work in IT and in my profession a degree is not essential. I'm in a good job that pays well but so are a few people of the same age who worked after school instead of Uni. Yes, my degree allowed me to jump a few levels but the people who worked earnt money and have no Uni debt....

If you have common sense, a decent brain and something about you then a degree is not essential as an employer will want you regardless.

Just a thought from an 'older women', you may still need to work into your late forties and fifties, trust me the body gets slower and weaker. If you have qualifications and a career you will have the choice, not to be riding and mucking out every day.:)

I'm another that would say go to uni, I left school and did my bhsai as a working pupil many years ago instead of continuing in education. With hindsight I wish I'd got a degree and been able to keep horses as a hobby instead of a career, it is hard work and you do get to a point where you are overfaced with them and just want something different, at least I did.

Once you have a useful degree you always have it under your belt and it will open more doors/opportunities for you, particularly in the future if there are fewer people taking degrees. Working with horses is something that you'd be able to do at any point if you are experienced enough.

If i was going to uni i would probably study Maths or Modern Studies/Social Studies so im not stuck for something to study that definitely will have a possibility of jobs at the end of it. Im in Scotland so I get all Fees paid for me and if push came to shove i could still stay at home would just need to travel 30 minutes in the car each way. Thanks for this, seems like everyone can see the best option uni. I already have a part time job with horses and i know how hard it is, 4 am starts for shows and late nights and heavy work, still love it for some reason i still love it lol...
