I am going to uni in September and would love to have a horse to ride whether that be owning/loaning/sharing.
I would love to get into some hunting and maybe some competing.
I just don’t know whether I could balance uni work, side job, social and having a horse to look after. Does anyone have any advice for this?
I also don’t know whether to own or loan because owning is expensive to buy and everything with the horse. But loaning can be difficult to find the right horse and an owner to get along with. Or there is sharing but then it could be tricky to find something an owner is happy for me to hunt or compete…

Not currently as away from home but for most my teens I was sharing horses
Owning or loaning are massive commitments, that take most of your time and money.

University is a massive commitment that takes most of your time and money.

I wouldn't advise mixing the two, unless it's a horse you already have, that you can't bear to be parted from, and have generous support to keep them near your uni.

I owned the whole way through uni. But he was on full livery and I was lucky enough to have financial support -wouldn’t have managed it otherwise

You'll probably be fine sharing if you can find one through university as generally less commitment than a full loan or owning.

But otherwise most uni's have active riding clubs to get a regular horsey fix :)

Where are you going to get 10 to 15k to buy a first horse, plus £600 a month, plus the cost of running a car on student finance? I'm a mature student so slightly different, but I see so many younger people having the most amazing time and enjoying their freedom. Having a horse to look after will stop all of that and unless you have a large amount of financial help will cripple you.

What course? If it involves any sort of work placement then probably not! It’s so time consuming being at uni particularly 1st year! They may have an equestrian society you can join, if so they will probably run events on a local riding school, my university does this. I’d wait and see how it goes, it’s definitely possible to share or loan but depends on the course and work commitments
