Hello!

I'm a student at the University of Roehampton in west London and I am looking to start up a university riding club. We are essentially looking for a riding school in London or the surrounding counties with which we can affiliate ourselves.

We currently have about 25 members of mixed abilities ranging from a national level showjumper to complete beginners. Our main aim is to provide weekly lessons and hacking for our members.

We also have several members wishing to compete in the BUCS league; however some do not have their own horses/have had to leave them at home in order to come to university. Therefore we are also interested in riding schools who would lend us their horses to compete on.

Some of our riders do have their own horses at present and will be competing in BUCS, so we would also welcome any sponsorships.

If you are a riding school/know of one who may be able to provide something for us please get in touch.
Many thanks,
Katie Davis

Stag Lodge is probably closest to you - but I don't know that much about their set up etc. CEC is a bit of a walk from the nearest bus stop - but I remember walking miles to get to my Uni Riding club back in the day! CEC horses were used at the Olympic Pentathlon (and is a great hireling centre) so borrowed horses to compete probably won't be a problem. Kingston RC is waiting on planning permission to build a lovely new indoor and competition facility also in the chessington area - but that might be a way down the road. Otherwise - Glanmire? Wildwoods?

As other posters have said - BUCS is only on borrowed horses so those who have brought their own can't use them for this.

If you are all under 21 what about pony club? (You can remain a member until 25 if already a member) Wimbledon Branch (based in Claygate - don't ask) is your nearest branch and we do accept members on borrowed horses - mostly CEC's actually! CEC is also a PC center - but their activities are more based around kids younger than you. PC would give you the chance both to train and to compete up to Nationals in 11 disciplines. (13 if you count the unmounted Quiz and H&P care)

As you probably guessed by now I am very local to you and heavily involved locally. If you need contacts etc just PM me.

Wimbledon Village might be worth an ask. Are they are riding schools out Epsom way?

Certainly when I tried as an undergrad to set up a proper uni riding club, with the aim of doing BUCS, the nearest decent RS that had the horses and facilities really didn't like the idea of having their horses used by people they'd never seen ride before. I tried to explain the level that BUCS run at but that fell flat on its face!

Ah ok thanks! I've been getting mixed messages at uni about BUCS so I thought there were two types of league.
I guess an hour at the very most.

There are two league levels, one show jumps at 80cm the other at 90cm. Both are on riding school horses, the whole idea of the competitions is testing your skill on unknown horses.

If you aren't used to it the comps seem a bit odd at first, lots of random rules. I did four years of competing and two years running the club at my uni, if you want any explanation or clarification feel free to drop me a PM :)
