My horse has suddenly developed bald patches and more and more keep appearing and getting bigger. They are not sore and the skin is clean underneath however they appear to be quite scabby as the hair comes out! There is no sign of lice but yard staff have treated him just incase but have no idea what it is! They don't seem to be overly irritating him and is fine with us touching them however he does sometimes seem to be scratching at areas more than usual! He suffers from navicular and is currently not going out in the field much not sure if this is linked! Anyone know what it could be?

Have you checked for mites? Pony had bald patches that sound very like what you're describing (mostly hindquarters, which weren't clipped, and a few around shoulders/neck), seemed to appear out of nowhere too, hair came out and skin was a bit flaky/scabby underneath, and it was mites.

We've checked for mites but there doesn't seem to be any sign of them and yes they are round when they start and gradually get bigger! I have photos but I can't work out how to post them on here haha. We're going to call the vet today as he is also lame but was just trying to see if anyone has had any idea what it could be

Will be very interested in your replies.
My pony has had a similar sounding problem - vet ruled out mites, ringworm, bacterial infection etc, but was still not sure. Pony then tested positive for Cushings, so vet wondered if his immune system was down causing this.
Hope you get an answer and solution soon.

It might be best for the vet to do a skin scraping so that it can be looked at under a microscope to try and identify what is wrong. Cushings was also the reason one of ours got rainscald like symptoms.
