Unneccessary Rug Buyers Anonymous...

My rug buying addiction was so much cheaper when my pony was 13.1hh and not 16.1hh!

However...the decision to see Barry has put a hold on more rug purchases...

...now I just can't stop looking at horses for sale, but i can't do anything until I sell him! And of course there are loads of ones that I really like the look of...

You realise you have too many rugs when you retire your horse, take another on loan, then end up with overlap between loan horse going back and new project being bought and briefly have 3 horses.

And you have enough rugs for all of them.

At one point my horse had 12 head collars, when I asked why I responded with "One for every month of the year" ;) I won't even begin to count lead ropes lying about, unused lol

Ahhhhh wonderful fellow rugaholics. :D

Please tell me that instead of mending CM's rugs that are waiting to be fixed (she's wearing the emergency spare ATM) that I should just buy her a new one... or two... or three. :p

Mend them. And buy more - you have no emergency spare for the emergency spare! :D

That's impressive!

Any chance of of a break down of the types of rugs that Kali has amassed?

Where do you keep all these rugs? Do you have rug trunks? Are your stable walls adorned with rugs?

P.S you all need help.

I have an enormous rug collection for my mare - the turnouts are all necessary and I have been sensible with those... But I cannot seem to resist a fleece. She has 7 and wears the same one all the time with the others kept in the cupboard "for best". My latest struggle has been trying to avoid buying an extra stable rug "just in case" it gets colder and her current one isn't enough. Realistically I could just layer them and she would be just fine.
But it would look so lovely on her..

I just hate seeing mucky rugs and so make sure I have at least two of each weight for each horse. . . I like them to look new and so once they are mucky they get hosed off and put in the washing machine with nicwax.

Were we separated at birth?!!! I hate mucky rugs too . . . and, yes, I know it's irrational to not like muddy turnout rugs ;).

I bought a fleece rug on ebay because i loved it. I have no pony to fit in it, but one day i may buy a pony that it will fit.

Ive never washed a rug, i just buy more instead.

I have a serious problem.

I have a rug trunk at home, a mini wardrobe in the garage, a trunk in the tack room and, yes, my stable walls (and the door) are adorned with rugs (have a huuuuuuuge, custom-made rug rail). I am a bit weird because I also like my rugs to be hung up neatly and in a certain way . . . you could say it's a fetish ;).

Stable rugs get hung up in the stable, dry turnouts over the door (I always take the detachable necks off so they don't drag on the floor/hang up neatly), wet turnouts or emergency spares are hung up in a little cubby YO built for me by the barn. The rest are either in the trunk in the tack room or in my garage . . . oh, and there are another three or four in the lorry - competition rugs :).

That's an impressive rug list, PolarExpress!

Looks quite reasonable when it's laid out like that! Perhaps ease up on the summer sheets though, eh :D!! (I am in denial and unable to bring myself to list my collection of saddle pads and numnahs. You are further along your journey than I am!)

But you do neeeeed spares, my boy destroyed 3 rugs this year and when you get a call from the yard to say 'X' rug is destroyed, do you have a spare for turnout/tonite etc I can always say yes :-)

My boy has :

2 fly rugs
2 fleeces
2 lightweight turnouts
1 stable rug (only used as a liner under turnout in really cold weather)
1 m/w turnout (must buy a spare since other ripped in half a few weeks ago)
1 fleece exercise rug
1 thermatex quarter sheet on order :-)

He is fully clipped, in work and stabled overnight but kept in his turnout even when in so I reckon thats quite a small collection !

Another use for rugs... Instead of a sleeping bag in bad weather in your car, a heavy weight turn out. Far warmer and it's waterproof !

I have found also depends on the yard you are on. I have a fair few stable/turnout rugs, as on previous yards the rugs would get trashed/wet/soggy/muddy on a regular basis, so you needed about three spares of everything to allow for time at the cleaners etc.

Current yard I have used two of my rugs...

I am a complete lightweight in the rug department but I've only had my boy a week. I bought him a thin travel rug to bring him home in and yesterday ordered a new fleece lined turnout rug.

He's only 3, never worn rugs before and is a fluffy teddy bear but I am a nervous new mama.

Should I buy him a fleece stable rug as well?

When I had my old horse 25 years ago he had one brown jute rug with a roller in the stable and a green New Zealand for outside - How times have changed.

I have managed to curb my rug habit with my current boy and i think i only have about 15 rugs, mostly turnouts but a couple of fleeces and stable rugs. He does spend the winter in turnouts as i dont change he rug at night as he is always toasty. As he is unclipped because he is broken i've found it really weird trying to rug him as he is normally clipped out and i full work so him being in just a rain sheet is all a bit odd. I think i worry more about how i rug him now than clipped! :p
Oh and i think i've got about 5 show rugs all for different occasions :redface3: and dont even start on my saddlecloth addiction! :biggrin3:

current pony already has 6 he is a hairy unclipped un worked native - he doesnt really wear rugs much at all !

My sister needs to join.....in the last three months she has brought 5 rugs for the tank and tb......granted the tb is feeling the cold so the under quilt was okay but the tank is a furnace.
Normally it's my mum:/

Tho I have a bruising boot and bridle problem.....would have one for snaffle bit and one for hanging cheek for all four of them that are in work if I could ;(

Blimey! and there was me thinking that 2 turnouts, a stable rug and a cooler would be plenty when I buy my new horse! :-) I obviously needed this post to educate me :-)

Hey, we can justify buying that new rug we fancy because in 12 months time, with inflation, that same rug will be more expensive. So....we are saving money buying now when we don't need it. !!

*enabling face*
If you're a leadrope hoarder, put one in the boot of all the cars in your family. In the last year I've caught two lose dogs and an escaped pony with mine :)

Also, I keep an mw turnout in the horsebox in case we ever breakdown and he has to stay over at a yard (or even a field) somewhere.

Agree with this! Within 2 weeks of moving to where I am now, I caught 4 loose dogs, the lead ropes were a godsend doubling up as a sort of slip lead !

It will - or maybe add a spare of a lighter and heavier turnout, but they are all bonkers.
