I was approached by someone in distress for their horses to come to me on 'emergency ' livery. Nieve and stupid I know, I said yes and the horses arrived that evening, and another 4 the next day. Although no written contract we agreed a price for the 18 cobs. Yes I know , 18 cobs various ages. It's been 2 months, excuse after excuse. Not seen the owners or recieved any monies. Brief phone conversations about car not working etc. I can no longer afford to look after these horses. I know i made a terrible mistake by believing their sob story and taking these animals in. What can I do now? Do I have any rights at all. Solicitors not an option financially.

Ive always thought clipping feathers off one leg of each cob might incentivise owners to remove them, or maybe trimming tails to hock length.

I don’t think that’s the right approach. There could be very good reason for the owners absence, “defacing” (if that’s the right word to use) the horses isn’t right in my opinion.

As said issue them an eviction notice for x date and have no further contact. If they don’t move, issue abandonment notice which usually lasts for two weeks, again no contact with them. After that they can be sold or removed by other means by you. Think it’s likely to be a person who will remove them all in the middle of the night and go to another poor souls yard.

Not that long anymore you only have to keep it for 4 working days before you ‘dispose as see fit’ in England
