do you think its about time all these so called rescue centres had to be registered? where i live theres 2 or 3 of them who claim this.they sell or use the term donate the animals via facebook and have facebook pages.one of them is a dog breeder aswell/one gets animals free or as cheap as possible and then sells them on for profit using the terms rehoming/another one is a pet peddler of cats and birds.none of these animals are spayed or neutered.

I think that all animal charities should be licenced, annually and by the relevant Council who would be advised by the local Farm Team from Trading Standards, should they not have the ability to make the decisions of whether to grant licenses, for them selves, or not. Annually would mean just that, and even though those charities which are found to be wanting, should receive the attentions of the rspca, none seem to because the existing dog eat dog stance.

I'm not a great one for 'Rules' and 'Regulations', but however well intentioned many may be at the outset, there's a burgeoning industry which is being viewed more as an income stream than an ethical or purposeful answer to our unwanted animals. With horses, the larger charities, considering their own futures I suspect, lobbied those who would listen, and brought to an end the equine meat trade. The result is that rather than face the disposal costs, many dump their unwanted animals upon those who make promises which they simply can't keep. There's such a local charity (is that REALLY the right word?) and from 3 or 4 premises, they have a confirmed out break of Strangles, but continue to move horses between sites.

As I say, it's becoming an 'Industry', and there are those involved who I wouldn't give a dead horse to.

A lot of these shady rescues are no more than dog dealers, they put all rescues at risk with their lack of standards even those with charity status. Tbf the RSPCAs hands are tied if the dogs have food, water and shelter, the law needs changing and until it is then these places will continue to be money making businesses.

While I can agree in principal that there should be more regulation, I don't think it will ever happen as who would manage it? There would never be government money made available and the police have more than enough to do.

The people you are describing sound more like dog dealers, going under the guise of a charity / re-homing centre and sadly people will fall for the sob story. There will always be a plentiful supply of dogs for them to 'trade' in as well while ever owners are offering them free to good home on preloved/faceache and the like.

It actually boils down to owners taking lifetime responsibility for the dog in their care, be that ensuring it is sold to a suitable home or keeping it until the end of its days.

There's another option. If I was to part with a dog, and I couldn't re-home it myself and know where it was going, then before I handed it over to a 'rescue', for it to end up God knows where and with who, I would put it to sleep. The same applies to my horses. Rescue Centres would never be an option for any animal of mine.

It's all to do with the 'responsibility' which you've mentioned.

Where I got my longdog from, a supposedly "rescue centre" was finally raided and closed down after a group of us campaigned for at least 2 years. The rspca would not get involved apart from "advising and warning " them.
They only finally got off their fat arses after some of our group managed to stage a protest at the gates, local tv and press were present, THEN and ONLY then did the rspca idiots come to be seen to be involved ( cameras was there thats why)
woman who ran the centre was jailed for 8 months, she's back out and still allowed to live in the rented property and has been raided again and another lot of animals removed. Case in on going but my sources tell me she's got more animals back in. So even if you follow the law it doesn't stop them. If all "rescues" were licenced who would enforce it?
This was a registered charity.

Surely Licencing "resue centres" would be the same as licensing Kennels or catteries and would be policed by the same people.

Agree but these people were getting dogs to sell on from another site which was a registered kennel, the rspca also placed dogs with this kennel AND charity when they had no more room, this is why they didnt want to get involved. But after it all came out the rspca claimed all the glory of course, if only people knew the truth!
Point I am making is, if this was allowed to go on despite us reporting it to everybody in authority to actually do something about it and it took 2 years to get a response, how are they going to police all the UK?
