I've recently bought a cob mare, she wasn't in good condition however we are getting there.
Her mane was very dirty so I solo raked it to thin it out then took a solo comb to tidy it up.
It's incredibly thick and resembles a toilet brush! She has a white mane which is " nicotine " stained and I can't keep washing it .
I would prefer not to hog her, does anyone have suggestions as how to keep in healthy , manageable condition whichout constantly washing it😳

Hog it... I had this dilemma not long ago. Hogged my Beast and both myself and the horse are so much happier for it. So easy day to day, looks smart and doesn't get in the way anymore. Otherwise...Have you tried using conditioner when you wash it? And a leave in detangler/conditioner? They might help. But if it is thick and greasy then it's either a lot of work to keep neat or a lot of work to get neat and living with it not being tidy the rest of the time. I'm a hogging convert but if the horse was a suitable type and didn't have issues when the mane got caught on reins I would potentially just leave it to do it's own thing then wash and Spanish Plait when we needed to look smarter.

I'm not adverse to hogging as I had my old cob clipped out completely. I clipped my new horses legs as she had the most awful grease and her face trimmed with the clippers.
At the moment for various reasons she's a "pet" but her mane is a permanent yellow colour and whilst it doesn't matter how she looks hogging might be easier from a maintainence point, thanks

Most horses look blinking awful hogged.

As it is a pet atm I'd leave pretty much well alone but brush through with one of those human-style-mane/hair brushes (start at bottom, with short strokes and work your way up gradually, in plaiting sections as it were, starting at the bottom and working up to longer strokes in each section

Sadly not Wash it and then she rolls! and it's too warm still for a neck cover so roll on winter.
