Unsettled, saw a horse pts for the first time

Well done you for andlin the stuathe ay you did an being so helpf and suportive.Thnk you a re probably still in shock.

I think I understood that and I agree that you probaby suffered some shock yourself. It's one thing being prepared for it but quite another when you're thrown into that situation when you least expect it. Well done for being there and handling it all so well.

Poor you and poor owner :(

I experienced it for the first time last year with my own boy. Fortunately (so to speak!) it was prearranged but it's still a shock and horrible experience. Something that I won't speak about but my boy went peacefully and I vowed to stay with him until the end.

Sounds like the right decision was made for the horse. Hope your ok!

Its always upsetting to see any animal having to be put to sleep; especially if seeing it for the first time, so we all feel for you OP. I had a little hen the other day and I just couldn't bear to "do the deed" myself, so took her to the vet as she needed to be "despatched", and I actually found myself with a tear in my eye, and my lovely vet, bless him, did what had to be done with all of the care and compassion that he put my old boy to sleep......... very moving.

It doesn't get any easier I'm afraid; there's always that sense of loss, even when there's a situation with a horse where the owner knows that the day is coming when they'll have to make a decision, versus the kind of situation that you witnessed as a result of an accident.

When my old boy was PTS and the light finally went out of his eyes, I found it an immensely spiritual moment; and the memory that I was left with was that I was able to finally liberate his soul from his poor old tired body, and he could then go on to another spiritual plane and live there without pain, till all of his animal and human friends can join him one day, and I believe we will.

A peaceful death is the gift that we alone can give to our animal/equine friends; and thank god for it. A pity we haven't yet gained the courage to be able to do the same for our human loved ones....... but that is another matter.

So good that you were able to be there for the owner OP; and for the horse too to know that some very special people were there for him at the very last.

Well done you we all react to these traumatic events in different ways but the old sayings are absolutely true the only 2 certainies in life are Rent Day and Death, &, If you have Livestock You will Have Deadstock.

*hugs* I witnessed it for the first time at the beginning of this year, twice in one day :(
I can still clearly hear the sound of the gun and then seeing a lifeless body on the ground. It was so hard, I'd known both horses since I was young. I still have nightmares about it.
Well done for being there for your friend, what a lovely thing to do!
