I have a pba which I bred and is now 18 years old. Earlier this year he had osteoarthritis in his hind hock the vet gave him a steroid injection which made him sound, At the same time he was showing signs of slight sensitivity over his quarters, blood, urine and scans show all clear. chiropractor found nothing wrong as the year progressed he has got worse we cannot groom him,rug him up or pick up his hind feet and sometime cannot get near him at all, His reactions are squealing, kicking out and trying to bite the strange thing is when you manage to get on him he rides as normal and will let you touch anywhere on his body.
Has anyone come across this before as we need to put him right?

could it be that the steroid injection has worn off and is troubling him again? He sounds like he's in pain or is at least expecting something to hurt?

Yes, will PM you contact info.
The horse that had this, also had same tests done & also chiro, the person that managed to resolve this was a different skeletal person. The horse was so bad, that you needed hat on & person holidng just to try to put on/change a rug & had to dodge flying feet. Was fly kicking out in the field & bum humping too - this was a previously quiet 16hh mare, easy for even a 5yr old to lead about.
No idea where you are in the country tho?

Thank you all ideas welcome were in Wiltshire I do have to say he is fine turned out in the field and to even catch its just when we think he thinks something is going to hurt him????
What was your mare like to ride???

It was a friends horse, she had also had injection but into the fetlock joint behind.
To be honest, friend was so worried about behaviour & trying to get saddle on, that she didnt get to ride for a month, whilst waiting for vet results & back lady.

It honestly looked like the horse was having a stinging fly problem - the kicking & humping intermittently, not good

Have a look at the thread two down from yours COULD IT BE ULCERS and watch the video posted on there ,is the last horse like yours ?worth a look .

Hi Frisky, great news and I would get him on a more nutritious diet and speak with a well known feed manufacturer like Sarazens, they have nutritionists that are really helpful. I agree putting the bone scan on hold, just one thing at a time. Keep us posted as to how you get on.

Hi Frisky, topspec is good etc. All of our racehorses acted differently, either they didn't focus, became spooky, bucking, not going forward, trying to avoid the leg aids, arching the back and lack of performance. One of our horses refused to even race in the end!
