I have noticed that my horse has unusual swellings just above this throat, behind his jaws. He also has swellings just behind his eye and near his cheek bone on the left side of his face.

The vet is coming out on Friday and I hope will take some blood tests. Horse also has what I suspect are melanomas.

Any ideas what the swellings could be and should I be concerned?

Many thanks

My mare and a few of the other horses at my yard get this kind of swelling that you describe when they have eaten spring grass or rich grass.

My vet told me it was the saliva gland producing a lot of saliva from the grass when I had them check my mare out and every spring she gets this reaction. Your best getting your vet to check though on Friday.

Oh thank you so much, I have been stressing about them thinking he has something nasty.

I do not feel quite so bad now.

It could be just "grass glands" where the horse (usually piggy ones!) finds itself in good grazing and eats and eats for Britain. The salivary glands have to work overtime and swell. If you took ned off grass for 24 hours they should subside. I have alwayd been told it's nothing to worry about. I'd keep a check eg demeanour, eating, temp, odd discharges etc to make sure it IS just grass glands and not something else bubbling up such as a tooth abscess or worse.

Be aware that if they don't go down to get them cehcked out. My mare has swellings under and behind her jaw which didn't go down. She had them a month while eating, drinking and behaving perfectly normal..no weight loss, nothing. One day she stopped eating and was dead 4 days later. She has Lymphosarcoma...Cancer

Don't want to scare you...just want people to be aware because my first thought was grass glands too...

OMG Thanks for that. How terrible for you. Vet coming at 10.30 so I will find out then. I am going to ask for a blood test too, is this sensible?

Thank you all so much.
