Unwanted advice

There is a guy at my yard who thinks he's some sort of 'expert' on horses.
He tries to advise everyone about everything, you can't even have a simple conversation with him without him trying to tell you what to do.

The other day I only asked him what the temperature was going to be overnight and he ended up telling me what to feed my horse!
He also advises on saddle fitting, jumping, dressage, napping problems, loading problems you name it he knows exactly what to do!
I wouldn't mind except he knows nothing, except for what he's seen on H+C TV watching Pat Parelli............say no more!

Anyone like that at your yard?

Yes there are a couple of men like that on my farm. I just smile and bide my time and then bring up something similar at a later date telling of how silly some people are for believing rubbish like this.

Oh yeah this is familiar- as long as they dont act upon this advice that they bestow they are harmless types who just seem to manage to waste 20 min of your day by standing in your stable doorway nattering away but bloking your escape route

there's someone like that in every situation.

Someone was helping us for a jumping lesson the other week and I had a bit of trouble with my position and they started trying to tell me how to fix it and what to do at home. All very well and good but they aren't even allowed to jump the hose they ride yet as they haven't been riding long enough so I had to bite my tongue a little.

Normally I take all advice and am grateful for it but this person has also had a go at me in the past about travelling without travel boots. I have tried 2 different pairs, rigid and soft, she has worn them in the stable and around the yard for hours and I also tried bandages. When horse wears them in the box them she kicks the box apart and I think she is going to fall over but travels silently with them off. I KNOW BEST what to do with the horse I look after THANKS!!

I also get a lot of advice from some people I know. They always give me advice about riding and especially jumping but they ride western and have never jumped in their life. Apparently riding and jumping well is just a state of mind and anyone can do it. I happen to very much disagree and think it's not that easy but I am always polite and just nod.

Sometimes I wish i could just be more blunt but I like an easy life too.
Now I just offer them my hat and say 'on you go then'. No-one has accepted thus far hehe.

We had medallion man on our year years ago!! Bought a horse to try and help him find Miss Right Number Three (without finding out why 1&2 had gone wrong!). Exracer as well!! Not the right horse for a total novice certainly one who couldn't be told anything!!!

He got thrown off so often. The funnist thing was having booted the mare in the guts the day before for chucking him. He spent the next day trying to get on, because every time he lifted his foot to put it in the stirrup she skitted away!!! I hacked out, mucked out and went home for lunch and he was trying to get on all that time!! I offered to hold the stirrup but was told "she has to learn"!!

When he came to sell her (because no one was interested in him and had heard all his diatribe) he wanted to put the price up because he had done so much work on her!!

Nod and smile, then they think your nice but quiet and you can get away when the waffle starts. They never last long so you don't have to bite your tongue forever.
 
I also just try to remember that they do probably mean well!! They might not be aware that they are annoying people lol.

I think he does mean well, but he butts in other peoples conversations, tells everyone what to do then goes!
I wouldn't mind if I had actually asked for his opinion!

Honestly it's got to the point now where I just say 'hello' and scuttle off before he starts telling me how to muck out or something

PMSL!!! Yeah, we've got one, thankfully she's not up much as she is just a sharer when Bens owner goes away and she drives me insane telling me what to do. she was telling me how to muck out this weekend. I said to her
"sorry but in the time it has taken you to muck out ONE horse I have mucked out 2 and swept the yard"

There's one everywhere - I usually stand my ground with them now, but sometimes I worry that it's me that knows nothing and thyey do know best

There was one at my last yard who insisted that the correct position for canter is to lean forward - by forward I mean like a jockey, even when I was attempting dressage....

Yep we have one.

I have been constantly told, among other things, that my horse eats too much hay, and he needs to go on a diet. (My vet, farrier, back man, YO, friends and myself all disagree.)

I just tend to smile and go mmm...

Nothing else you can really do!
 
We sorta have one, probs more but i dont talk to many people ^_^
But hes actually quite nice, does know his stuff and just likes to talk a lot so i nod along pretendig i know what he's on about...Most people are trying to help, its just when people talk down to me i get annoyed
 
I'm sorry to say they crop up in every sport. I have come across them in shooting and archery and it is always the same type, couldn't hit a barn with a baseball bat, but can tell you all the things you're doing wrong.

Fortunately I doubt I will have to suffer a riding know it all, as the OH is my instructor, and as a secondary school teacher with over 25 years experience, she has a withering glare that would put Medusa to shame.
 
We have a lady like this up the road from us. She only got into horses and riding quite recently, but now thinks she is the local expert and likes to voice her opinions on what every else is doing wrong with their horses! She criticised the owner of a porky Shetland for not giving it hard feed and commented that the hay we were feeding our horses 'looked poor old stuff' when it was in fact top quality Horsehage! Funnily enough, she was the one I saw long-reining her horse in an upside-down pelham

Bless her, she doesn't mean any real harm, so we have all learnt to grin and bear it when she comes up with her little 'gems' of advice!
 
PMSL I am so sorry that I have PMSL, but as I am on my own then I don't get that sort of thing happening

At my previous yard we had a man who had an opinion on everything. He would preside outside his stables and survey his little kingdom. He was also a bully and had left many people in tears. He did offer his opinion once to me which lead to a heated discussion and ended with me saying to him " You know everyone thinks you are a w**k*r, I don't I think you a c***.(I know its bad but I was provoked)

It never surprises me to come across a "Know it All" woman, but when it comes to "know it all" men it always makes me chuckle!!

9 times out of 10 they dont ride themselves but they are always sooo ready to dish out their unwanted/unhelpful advice. They live their lives through their children & think that their child is the best rider on the yard / the most comitted / got the best horse etc and are only to glad to blow their childs trumpet.

We've got 1 or 2 on here, I always have a smile when I see their posts pop up in all sorts of conversations!
 
Zoobie. I was in fits of laughter reading your post thank you. We have one at our yard that has an opinion on everything and I really do try to ignore her but she does wind me up so. The thing is she rides her horse occasionally for a couple of weeks then takes it on a long distance ride and cant tell that it is hoping lame the next day.

i am on a lovely yard, people will be happy to help if you ask, otherwise they don't interfere, i would tell that man to f*** off, TBH sounds like a pompus pratt.....
