I continued to treat as an abcess but had him booked into the vets this morning to examine him as he wasnt getting any better or worse. Dropped him off at 9am and he was ready by 1pm!
They examined his foot and he stood like a rock, so no abcess.
They troted him up. Lame on his left hind (the offending leg) and also lame left fore but he has problems infront also so that isnt unusual.
They wanted to rule out that it was related to his arthritis in is hocks so they nerve blocked him below the hock which provided a possitive result. They then isloated the lameness to the fetlock and pastern area.
After X-rays, they discovered the start of arthritis in his fetlock and also an old sesamoid fracture. No new fractures so the vet has diagnosed him with a 'sprain' if you like of the collateral liagments around the area. ( we assume he had a hooley as I found him lame after he has done the night in the field alone.)
The vet said he would normally perscribe ten days box rest on bute, but with his navicular, kissing spine, bone spavins and now changes to his fetlocks they have prescribed two months field rest with ten days of bute and to re access the situation.
If he is sound in walk to hack out then to do this a couple of times a week as this will help his arthritis, if there is not much improvement overall then to consider full retirment. He is 15 and has a host of things wrong with him that was diagnosed back in 2010, and to be honest, if he is comfortable i would be happy for him to retire or if he can pootle up the lane a couple of times a week leading off my other horse, i would be happy for that to. vet has given me 40 bute as he is happy for me to administer if he is having an off day.
I fancy it wont be in the to distant future that i will have to make the decision' but at the moment he is happy as larry in the field and still clearly comfortable enough as he still manages to run across the field to the grass and escape!! he is certainly way off the stage of his ailments having an impact on his quality of life.
