Thought i would let you know the out come of my in foal mare who the vet thought was aborting about 10 days ago.
Tonight she starting foaling and she produced twins. One mummified and a coloured filly who was born alive but died about an hour after birth.
The mare is as well as can be expected after all this.

Oh that's sad

Were they not picked up at the scans?

I'm so sorry to hear this; it's a breeder's nightmare ; it seems a complete waste of a year, all your hopes and dreams gone in an instant; I know it happened to me two years running so I truly sympathise.

How is your mare coping, have you left the filly in with her until she realises and loses interest because that way she will settle better, gruesome as it sounds? I hope your vet is a good source of information for you but if in doubt, the many good breeders on here will always be willing to help, you know that.

Do keep us posted on how the mare is.

What a terrible shame! So near - and yet so far!

I often wonder if - in these cases where abortion looks to be pending - putting the mare on hefty antibiotics might help

I had a ewe years ago who nearly died of pneumonia some weeks before lambing - we knew she was carrying twins and expected both to be lost but I kept her on l/a antibiotics. She carried to due date and produced one live, healthy lamb and a mummified one that was completely dried out - vet was amazed - and we can only assume that the antibiotics prevented the dead lamb causing infection that WOULD have killed the other.

I think I'd be inclined to try it if I had a similar case with a mare.
