Merlin is living out this year and is not clipped. He is welsh D x ISH and is not woolly but has a decent coat.

Feed wise he is getting a scoop each of sugar beet and molassed chaff with half of nuts, garlic, glug of corn oil and a joint suppliment. He is on 5 acres with one other pony and the grass is still decent in quantity, not sure about quality at this time of the year though.

He seems to have been warm enough so far, but with the temperature dropping now do you think he will be warm enough in a Rambo Duo without a liner??? Its 100g on its own.

I do have a 200g and 300g liner, but not a 100g liner at the moment, and I think that to put the 200g liner in (making the rug 300g) would be too warm.

What do you think?? I see plenty of similar type horses out without any rug at all, so am I just being soft??

Sorry its long and rambling.... thats just how i feel tonight!

well today i finally changed over and went from lightweight to medium weight as it is getting just a bit chillier now, my girl has an irish clip also, and a good woolly coat on the rest of her

it has been so mild i had tried medium weight before and she was just too hot, but temperature has definitely dropped now

All mine are unclipped and in LW turnouts - they range from 13hh woolly native type pony up to 16hh veteran 7/8 TB mare. If you are in the south east and your pasture is not too exposed, then I can't see you should need much more in the way of rugging unless your's is a particularly bad doer.

Mine is in a cheap saxon 180g rug at the moment, he is fairly wooly, but not fed. When its consistently freezing I'll up his rug to stop the weight dropping off.

Hardy pregnant mare is naked, but fat and warm!

Thanks, dont feel so bad now... he is a good doer and the field is sloping and very well sheltered. No buildings but immense hedges round three sides, also some nice big trees

Will save the liner for arctic weather now
