UPDATE #2..."2 Days at new livery and already miserable"

Thanks everyone :)

Had a really good lesson and stuff today, and no YO is not doing it to be horrible etc she is honestly just trying to help I think its all just been a bit much for the first week. Regardless, she helped me out a lot with him today and the good days are deffo gonna outweigh the bad ones, hes so happy there I wont be moving him any time soon :) Thick skin, begin to grow :D

People saying to watch what I post etc, all along I have said I am sure everyone is trying to be helpful, I havent come on here to slag everyone there off, but just to vent my upset-ness (yes, that is a word:rolleyes:) at how some things have been said. Im sure nothing has been done or said to upset me, and I know that, its just hard going from having your horse at home to a livery thats all :) I know far better than to come on here ranting and raving about how everyone at the yard is this that and the other! YO has been very helpful when asked and gave me a fab lesson today, just had a rough first few days thats all!

All suggestions of lockable boxes are brill, but there simply is nowhere to put them, end of discussion :( I would quite like one not to keep other liveries away, but incase of a break in...might see what I can do.

Thanks so much Fairy :) Was such a proud mum this morning, he went amazingly, was like riding a different horse! He almost came to call in the field as well...but then I realised he had just spotted a patch of lush grass 3ft in my direction :( I think its going to be very up and down but having a very good day today made yesterday not matter, so here is to more fantastic days!

what about something that can live in your stable?

do you use haynets/hackracks? as you could put something under neath that wont take up space, you can also get small lockable boxes or even make one, just something that you can put smaller items in.

for your rugs can you hang them at the back of your stable?

Im really shocked and disappointed to read so many posts saying that this is the sort of behaviour you just need to put up with on livery yards!!

If people take your stuff without asking its theft and you wouldnt tolerate it anywhere else surely? You are paying for a service from the yard owner and manager and if you are being subject to verbal abuse or some sort of whispering campaign then thats ot on either.

MOVE!!!

I must have been very lucky in my 40 odd years of horse ownership and yard management!

I would seriously be unimpressed with people 'borrowing' my stuff. Had a bit of a do with someone at old livery yard, who felt it was ok to use my broom every day, twice a day, without asking, no matter where I put it. I ended up having to ask her not to use it, and if she had a twice daily need for a broom maybe she should buy her own? Apparently this is a pathetic thing to suggest. Its not that I mind people borrowing stuff occasionally, but think about it, my broom was a decent, quite expensive one, and with her using it as well as me, would only last half as long! Maybe I am petty.

Thanks everyone :)

Hey, great news. Really is :)

Must admit, I moved to a large livery yard a couple of years ago (previously always having been at very small private yards) and ABSOLUTELY hated it for the first week or two. I think I even posted on here about it.

Two years on I am now one of the 'oldest' liveries on the yard and feel very comfortable there. Most of the 'awkward individuals' have now moved on and the atmosphere around about the place is so much better. I'm friendly and welcoming and the new liveries who've moved in seem a cheerful and pleasant bunch. That said, there are still a couple of odd 'oldies' that will refuse to say "Hello" when they pass you on the yard and make a point of looking through you on purpose. Even when you smile at them and say "Hello" first (weirdos). I've never done anything to these people so happily ignore them back now. I'm past worrying how I can get them to like me! Life's too f'ing short!!

Long may you continue to be happy at your new yard. But remember, don't suffer in silence!

Good to hear things are improving - do communicate with the YO though if you're not happy. They're not mind readers and things we may think are 'obviously' unacceptable sometimes just haven't occurred to them, perhaps because of the way everyone there has worked in the past.

I think sometimes settling into a new yard is a bit like a horse settling into a new herd. Liveries and YO will assert themselves and be curious and then you will gradually know where you stand in the hierarchy and who is nice and who is not and what irritates people etc.

At the moment being new you will be at the bottom but you might as you get more confident and assertive move up the pecking order a bit.

However the rug issue would really annoy me as I have expensive rambo rugs as these are the only ones that fit my pony and do not rub. If someone else borrowed one and I was left with another make then it would be detrimental to my pony which is not acceptable. Also if a rug gets damaged who pays?

I have a rug bag for storing my rugs in and they take up less room than leaving rugs loose. You could then padlock the zips together to prevent others from using your rugs. Perhaps you could talk to your YO and say that you need for your horses benefit to make sure that the rugs he needs are available and with the current system you cannot guarantee that as there might not be enough rugs to go round if some people do not own very many and rely on borrowing other peoples. The only way you can do this is to reserve your rugs for your use only and that the rug bag will take up less space than having the rugs loose.

Quite a few people have these on our yard and keep them padlocked but outside their stable. So could you look at keeping some things outside rather inside, these boxes are quite heavy to carry when full and big so hard to steal unless you had a large lorry and were a strong man.

I also have the corner of the stable made into a cupboard it was there when I got to the yard and is really good for storage, but I have a huge stable. Most of the older stables had them in but the newer ones don't so some people got them put in.

I would not have any yo telling me when and more importantly who was going to check or do my horses teeth, she'd have been told thanks but no thanks, my horses teeth are fine so back off.
As for the stuff going missing, get a lockable box for your stuff and permanent marker on it all
I do think theres always a settling in period on any yard, but stuff like what vet, dentist, farrier you use are a personal thing, and should be your choice, not yo
