the mystery appears to have been solved after almost 8 weeks of every exam known to man...it was a little sharp tooth! I get his teeth done every six months, it was the first thing the vet checked but there was this little tooth right at the back with an odd sharp angle that seemed to get pressed by the noseband that caused all the problems and it went unnoticed! Clearly Rusky is a sensitive soul, I imagine many other horses would have just put up with it, but I am really glad I insisted we keep looking (vet suggested sending him to a professional to 'sort him out' at some point). The difference when the tooth was rasped was immediate and enormous!
 
That just shows exactly how problems in one spot can manifest themselves throughout the whole horse! I'm glad it was something simple and you've sorted it.
