Hi,

Last week I posted about a mare that I knew a few years ago and her owner who told me 'make me an offer and she's yours'.

Well I rang the owner to arrange a visit and got told by the womans husband that she has changed her mind and now wants to keep the mare.

I'm so disapointed! I had worked out so much stuff in my head - bringing her back into work, schooling, competitions etc.

And now for the yukky part!

I have had my gelding for years and Iv never had to clean his penis very often. Maybe twice a year. When I do I just use warm water that I have bolied then left to cool down. I last did it about 8 weeks ago.
When I went out to feed him tonight i noticed a strong smell, checked his bits and I nearly gagged!! It was disgusting!

Is there an obvious reason for this sudden increase in 'stuff'?
Has anyone elses' gelding suddenly gotten dirtier back there?

Sorry for the mankyness of my question!!!

The warm wet weather probably does't help. also incativity like box rest.
No panic, sort a mild water salt solution, put your rubber gloves on , lots of cotton wool and give it all a good clean.
Mild salt soution is about 1 tea spoon salt to 2 pints warm water.

One of mine has a disgusting sheath/penis and I have to clean him out regularly so I sympathise! Not sure what would cause sudden change though as mine has always been prone to getting greasy lumps and crusty bits (urgh, reminds me he is about due for a wash).

Could be flies irritating maybe, or some sort of infection? Has anything changed recently, is he out more perhaps? When you say it smells, is it just an unpleasant smell or really bad? If the latter, maybe call the vet in case there's something wrong.

I have to use a mild, non-irritating cleanser for my pony as plain water won't shift it all, although you really have to make sure you rinse well after. Also many years ago I had a gelding that got a tumour on the end of his penis - does yours ever let it 'all hang out' so to speak? If so have a good look, check for suspicious lumps etc or bleeding. More likely if he's a grey or got pink skin patches round that area.

Get your rubber gloves on plenty of wam water with a sheath cleaner then rinse off well (I use the hose!

lol)

It's possible that by cleaning it, you've upset the natural bactarial balance and it's gone overboard.

It would be worth dragging it all out (if you can) and having a good look for any damage (and a bean whilst you're there). If it's not injured, infected, inflammed or sore, then I'd be leaving it for a couple of weeks and see it it sorts itself out.

I've heard that there is an increase in flies this year due to the weather conditions, and they have learnt the new trick of laying eggs in horses sheaths! Make sure you check there are no maggots up there - the vets are warning of this happening on a more regular basis.

Cleaning with warm water is probably the best thing to do on a regular basis.
