and done his ligament in his stifle he had 7 weeks box rest, Everything healed but he then went abit weird on the other side. Took him to the vets today thinking more xrays/scans will be needed on the 'weird side', but, the vet doesnt think he is lame, just stiff. Maybe deep muscle/pelvis out.

He's a very big beefy WB (16.3/17h) and all in all he has had 12 weeks box rest so hes understandilby getting stiff. Vets treatment is get our back lady up to give him a deep going over, and bring him back into work, fingers crossed, this will help him and he will be back to normal, FINALLY!!

So.... Has anyone bought a horse back to work after box rest (no turnout allowed yet), how slowly did you do it? I am seeing the vet again monday so i can double check it with him, but just wondering what others have done..

Walking him in hand has and is being done atm, (until back, saddle etc is all checked to get back on) How slow did you go?
Walking for 15mins for a fortnight/month, then introduce trot?? Have no idea??

Sorry its long and probably boring

Hi, my horse has just been given the ok today to be brought back into work after tearing her DDFT and shes been on box rest for that since Sept. We have been in hand walking for 2/3 times per day for the last 8-10 wks. We can now begin ridden work, hacking out only begining with half hr and building up gradually just in walk. No trot for at least 2 months but vets are coming to check her in a month anyway so this will be re-assessed then depending on how shes doing at that time. Its going to be a long haul and she wont be in the school for some time but Im not bothered and will do whats necessary. All the hand walking hasnt been in vain.

I had a horse in on box rest 4 about 8 months. I walked him in hand for 10 mins for about 2 weeks then built up from there, up 2 15 mins then 20 mins. Then i got on him, and did 20 mins walk then 25 mins walk with a few mins trot. It took a long time to build him up but hos injury was quite bad. it really depends on the type of injury, how well the scar tissue is developed and how the healing is going and what the chances of reoccurece are. i think you know your horse best and when he is struggling you will know to ease off on him for a few days and then start to build uo again when you feel he is more able. The vet should give you a fitness regieme though.
