Hi all,

I haven't posted for a while as I've started a new job and now that the racing season is in full swing all my spare time seems to be spent at the yard, but here I am and I thought I'd give you a little update on my beautiful Big Ears.

I posted a while back to say I was sending her away for the summer to a friend to be schooled and to perhaps teach her to jump, and she went six weeks ago. Sending her away served several purposes; firstly, I knew I didn't have the time or knowhow to bring her on as much as my friend could, secondly my friend has been suffering with a few problems and I thought Big Ears would be a nice project for her now that her own ex-racehorse has come on so much, and finally it meant that my girl wouldn't be stood around at home where my dad and brother could ask what the point of having a racehorse that doesn't race is/putting pressure on me to sell her because she's 'useless'.

Rather than bore you with words as to how she's getting on, here are a few pictures that my friend sent to me:

I went to ride her a fortnight after she went and my friend was already getting her to work in an outline and had done a lot of work on the lunge. Her general fitness is improving as she's on the walker every day with the racehorses and then has an hour schooling in the afternoon. As you can see from the photos she's only jumping on the lunge line at the moment, she didn't 'get' the whole jumping malarkey to begin with so my friend is working on instilling the idea into her before trying it on board.

I'm immensely proud of her for turning her hoof to something different; I had great fun with her as my first racehorse and though I don't have a competitive bone in my body I could be tempted to enter a few jumping competitions around the local shows once she comes back (my friend is not-so-gently pushing me into this, she thinks it will be good for both of us!).

I'm planning on going down again to visit her the weekend after next, and will have a 'lesson' with my friend to see if I can put into practice what she's taught Big Ears. I'm also hoping we can go for another hack like last time so we can race her and Beama around the forestry tracks - I may even be brave enough to try jumping the small logs that I was too scared of last time!

Before I sign off, here's a couple of photos of her settling into her summer residence:

I think I'm about to burst with pride :) thanks for the lovely comments, it's nice to hear that some people think the same as me! I'm so looking forward to seeing her, I miss her big ears and the look on her face that says 'so where's the food?'
