As some ofyou may remember, i posted two weeks ago about delicia being found on three legs, absolutly hoping lame. There wasa debate between the farrier and the vet as to whether it was an abcess or something more sinsiter as itcame on so quickly. Well we found a lot of gunk in the front of the sole and by the frog, politicing for two weeks and gunk is still coming out. The farrier came out and under vet supervision cut a lot of the hoof and frog away and found the root cause of the problem, a massive infection inside the frog, we think she stood on a thorn or something, but we can never be sure.

Delicia is now sound but because of the nature of the infection and where it is, she has been given a massive amount of anti-biotics, new dressings to be changed daily and the hoof disinfected daily, and a metal plate to cover the exposed hoof...

The day she was found

the metal plate

It looks quite hardcore and i have never seen anything like it, but it works! She is now out at night again so is less stressed and the hoof is given a chance to recover.

SM - yes i havent either! she has a horse shoe on her hoof and four bolt holes which the plate is then bolted onto, a little like studs!

well it's great that it's working - bet that makes a cool clunk !! A friend had a mare with a similar condition, and she was tubbing every night (epsom salts in warm water). The water stank afterwards, but it helped get the goo out and did the trick, along with the poulticing. But it looks like the plate is doing a brilliant job as movement's what she needs, and we could not get this mare out and about for absolutely ages, partly cos of the worry of re- infection. !! sm x
