Update, horse accident in Leeds, still need help

LL, one can only hope you never find yourself in need of a good Samaritan.

Great news and good luck to John boy and his owner

Well done to all involved in helping this horse and his owner, what a shame some people have to be so negative once again, wishing John Boy a speedy recovery x

Hi there, just to let you know that John Boy has his own facebook page now so all updates will be posted on their for anyone thats interested.

thanks for everyones support x

If this is the same horse as the one I have posted in the photo, he is often tethered outside my house in burly park in a childrens playground! He never has water and is by himself. We have taken buckets of water up to him a few times. :/

Stop taking him water then the authorities will be able to see if he is dehydrated and act.

Some travellers take water to the horse a few times a day - it is quite common.

@moomin1
Previously we have rang RSPCA who referred us to whw who were going to come out as he was incorrectly tethered (to a tree) was alone and appeared to need water as he drank 3 buckets after us trying to get him to stand up for a long time! but he was moved later that day so we called to cancel. we spoke to some people who live there too and they said he's always there and we he seen him several times over the last year tethered in the park!

Please dont think I am in favour of tethering, I'm not.

However I have spoken to someone tonight who has also seen him on numerous occasions. She is also not in favour of tethering.

Apparently he is always in good condition and well shod. He always has fresh grass and is moved regularly, to places with shelter.

If necessary he has good quality well fitting rugs.

He seems to think the world of his owner, and his owner feels the same about him.

I might not agree with the way he is kept, but he looks in a dammed sight better condition than a lot of horses I see who have a much more conventional lifestyle.

His owner was not likely to give him up, he is not a rescue case. If people on here had not helped, where would he have ended up. Recovering from his injuries on a tether with his owner trying to look after him also injured.

Sensible and rational reply

I would also like to say thank you and well done for this post ....this is exactly how we see it and would do it again for any horse AND owner in the same situation xx

Just wondering - what will become of John Boy if as a result of this horrible accident he's too traffic shy to pull the cart & earn the owner's living again once he's recovered? I really hope there is somewhere safe he can go if this happens!

I'm not saying we shouldn't help the horse etc I think it's great everyone is helping him out. Just seeing the horse tied up most of the time alone is not something I like walking past on my way out of the house. I think people should take more responsibility for their animals and not think it is acceptable to tie their horse in the local park, regardless of its health!!

As I said before, I agree, but thats a whole different subject. Have a look at this http://www.facebook.com/bookmarks/groups#!/stoptethering

Doesn't stop me thinking people were right to help this boy.

You lot, in the main, restore my faith in human nature.

Sat here with tears at the realisation there are still good people out there who care for the horse and don't judge the owner by his social or racial standing.

What can I say I don't like the tethering in the park without water. But bloody hell I have seen horses on here very bad condition overweight and underweight not tethered with water and have to say he looks ok, feed wise. And I dont understand the ins and outs of people's work, but I do understand he needs the horse to work and how many of us need a horse for work everyday?

This! I can also confirm that this particular horse is currently in a stable with water available 24/7 in large tubs, if I put a black bucket of water in front of him he will still drink the whole bucket immediately. I wonder if, because of the nature of his 'job', he has learned to drink a lot when it is offered because it may be a while before he is offered another drink. He does not drink excessively in the stable! This horse is one of the fittest horses I have ever met, he is fit and very well cared for, his feet are beautiful with well fitted shoes. Whilst I don't like tethering on the whole I would imagine he is tethered every time he is given a break. He is also a lovely natured horse and doesn't appear to have a nasty bone in his body, he is obviously well treated because he would be abusing our 'gentle handling' by now if he wasn't.

For anyone that is interested his owner is making a good recovery too.

Just because somebody keeps their horse in a different manner to most doesn't mean they are wrong!

Bless you and yes he probably does drink for the sake of it. Has he been in the field yet?

What a lovely story proving that there are still people in this world who care.
Tethered or not the horse is obviously adored by his owner. So what if he is from the travelling community or not. Does that mean he is not capable of caring for his horse? There are more than a few people on here who could learn a lot about horse care from this guy.
Passion for horses transcends all boundaries.
Wishing them both a very speedy recovery.

Tethering the way this horse sounds as tho he has been is not where the tethering issues lie.

If anything, by helping someone who does treat his horse properly on the tether, it may help to show that its not a prejudice against a community that prompts the tethering welfare concerns, simply the lazy and cruel way it is sadly often done.

Tethering doesnt have to be cruel in theory, it just very often is because the horses are not moved daily, with access to water.

Unfortunately he cannot have turnout with us. I have 3 stallions of my own and the only field I have free is alongside them, our mares run at the bottom of the free field. If I had decent fencing then I wouldn't have hesitated to put him out and risk it but he isn't my horse to take those risks with and I wouldn't really want to risk mine even though they do have decent fencing at their side.

So refreshing to see people from here helping a horse and owner in need.
Some of us, myself included are self-employed and if for whatever reason I was unable to work through illness or injury, I would be unable to care for my horses.
Not all horse owners have the luxury of huge savings, being able to keep horses at home or a secure job.

Just seen this update on Facebook

Great news. Well done to everyone and especially Dolce for taking him in.

JB is good, he has started trashing his bed so I think he is getting bored and ready to be out, bless him.
The owner has managed to find him a field where he can be turned out, which is fantastic news, so hopefully he will be going home very soon :-)
