update on mare from post above

she as had the surgery last wednesday and is now home

she had a resection of dorsal spinous process of 3 thoracic vertibrae (T13,T14,T15)
she as staples in which are to be removed tuesday next week

very pleased with the neatness and all thanks to dr peter milner at leahurst

up to now very pleased with the wound as no swelling or discharge and is coping really well so fingers crossed this carries on
here are the photos from yesterday when we changed her dressing
the blue wire is stitched in her skin for the dressing to be placed either side then fastened with a shoelace pattern of surgical tape

That is a really neat job, looks like you have had the best care for your mare, i hope she comes good for you. Best of luck xx

THANKYOU MAHOGANYBAY --I TO HOPE SHE COMES RIGHT AFTER ALL SHE'S BEEN THROUGH THIS YEAR SHE DESERVES IT
SHE'S BEEN AN ANGEL THROUGHOUT IT ALL CONSIDERING SHE CAN BE BOSSY & GRUMPY AT TIMES

What a good idea the blue loops are! We had terrible trouble keeping adhesive dressings on our mare when she had the same op and they needed changing.....

Best of luck - it's a long road, but usually a very successful one!

looks really neat. my friends horse had t14 removed and it got a secondary infection and wound looked awful - i had to help clean it - not nice job! . and yes she tried to stick dressings to back - those blue loops very good idea. hope all goes well - my friends horse recovered well even with the infection and has gone on and done dressage afterwards.

thank you for all your replies

mare is doing very well--still calm with box rest unbelievable really but she can be hand grazed so not completely in all the time as she hand walks twice a day for 15 mins aswell
into 4th week next wednesday so last week of in hand walking (20 mins week 4) and then she can go out into small confined paddock (a few hours)for 4 weeks then the pessoa work starts for 4-6 weeks building up each week
pics attached are of when staples came out blue stitches left in to keep sterile padding on --
the stiches are out now and when i get a chance i will take some more photos
but all is looking good at present
