Update of laminitic pony

So a week or so ago I posted about how my little pony had some unexplained lameness and we called the vet out who unfortunately confirmed laminitis. He was also tested for cushings which came back positive. The vet visited this afternoon to see how he was progressing. Unfortunately he hadn't been progressing and was just as sore as when the vet first touched his feet 10 days ago. He was absolutely hating box rest and the x-rays came back to show a substantial amount of rotation in the pedal bones of all four feet. We all agreed it was best for him and unfortunately we have put my little pony to sleep. Thank you for all the advice and kind words but currently I am heart broken as I grew up with him and have had him for nearly 11 years...
 
How sad for you but the horse that ends its life with its long term owners is a lucky horse .
I am going to test all my over fifteen year olds for cushings every year symptoms or not when they have their free tests thing on at the vets .

Definitely I am very grateful to the fact I was with him all the way through until his finally moments. Sounds like a very sensible thing to do.
 
Big hugs and absolute respect to you for doing the right thing, no matter how hard it may be. It's lovely to hear that he was in such a happy home for a long long time.
 
Thank you all for the kind words. It was so hard but I know it was the right decision as it is unfair to keep him alive just because I wanted him too be. He was an outdoors pony and it was just cruel to him to leave him in for the period suggested but I am happy to the fact I know now he's out of pain and that I was there during his final moments x

you did the right thing I know it's tough you will feel rotten for a while but just remember all the happy years you had, it broke my heart to have my mare pts last year she too hated being in the stable so I know what's your going through, it does get better promise x
 
Bless you for doing the right thing for the pony. I am sorry for your loss but I would do exactly the same with my old boy.

Keep those happy memories close in the times of sadness. X
 
Oh no. I read your original post, and I was really hopeful for good news when I saw this update.

I'm so sorry. You did the right thing for your pony and now he's pain free. Remember the good times, treasure the special memories and look after yourself.
 
I am so sorry. Laminitis is truly horrible.

We lost daughter's pony in similar circumstances last year. No warning signs at all.

I now test for Cushings regardless of lack of symptoms.

Im sorry i wasnt expecting that outcome, i had a pony that got really bad laminitis, caused with becoming a cushings horse, grass was his enermy, he had no live so i had him put down.
 
Thank you all for your kind words. It really was the best option as even if he did get better he would do some damage to himself being in the stable for that amount of time. I will always have the good memories of him and luckily just before he went I did get see a glimmer of my naughty little pony again when he finally got to have some long lush grass.
