Hello all,
being webmaster of www.animalhope.de, I want to give information about the situation as it presents itself up to date on behalf of Felicia Ruhland, the association chair(wo)man of animal hope e.V. Illingen, South-Germany.
Felicia Ruhland was asked by someone to transport the two russian horses and Mr. Popov from Leipzig to Illingen. There, she was informed the horses should rest some days and in the meantime Mr. Popov would have an official meeting at a society called "Catharina Pawlowna".
I found a matching link: www.catharina-pawlowna-gesellschaft.de - so, this society exists.
On arriving home in Illingen after a long and exhausting night-drive she was shocked about the condition of the two horses. She decided that she would not allow Mr.Popov to continue his ride with this horses.
She contacted the public veterinary health officer, who upon examination of the horses decided to officially confiscate them, to prevent them from being forced to travel on.
According to law Mr. Popov now is forbidden to ride on the horses, but could transport them wherever he wants to, as in the papers his name is stated as being the owner. Which is not true.
According to our information the owner is a "Alexander Latenkow" (not sure about the spelling), who, only to make the crossing of the borders easier, allowed that Mr. Popov`s name was entered in the papers as being the owner of the horses.
Mr.Popov was not pleased (to say the least) about the confiscation an went raving mad at Felicia Ruhland.
There was police involved and it was really embarrassing.
Worrying about the possibility that he would get hold of a transport vehicle and take the horses to the french border - Felicia decided to put the horses in a safe place. There they are now.
Mr. Popov subsequently went to the police and filed a stealing-charge against Felicia Ruhland.
She, herself filed a sexuall harrassment charge against Mr. Popov, as his behaviour the days he stayed as a guest in her house has been inappropriate.
Meanwhile the russian embassy had been contacted and Mr. Popov was spoken to at the phone.
Which did not help much. He still insists on travelling on with the horses.
On getting information of his behaviour the sponsors and russian societies which were supporting Mr. Popovs ride through Europe drew back their support.
In the meantime some friends of him arrived and on monday they will discuss with Felicia Ruhland if and how the transport of the two horses back to Russia will take place.
Felicia Ruhland has two options in her mind - she thinks it would be best for the horses to get home and recover there, being fed on the herbs and concentrated feed they know and are used to. She detected that the foreign feed is not really wanted by the horses.
But for getting them home there should be a trustable person accompanying the group (Mr. Popov and his friends) to make sure that the horses reach their orignal owner and place safe and sure.
Here, some help would be desperately needed.
The second otion could be to find a safe place in Germany were the horses can stay. The animal shelter of Felicia Ruhland is not able to take them in as the lease of
the grounds is running out soon and a new place, which we are desperately searching for, has not be found yet.
So, if anybody could take the two russian horses in, that would be a great help.
We are only a little animal rescue group in the south of Germany and can`t afford big amercements regarding the charge filed against Felicia of "stealing horses", so we do hope that this one will work out with only a small fine.
The heart of the group - Felicia Ruhland - is a strong willed woman, who is not easy to be threatened. Here she took Russia on which, in my mind, is really outstanding brave.
If you have any suggestions or are able to offer help in any way - (e.g. contacts to russian animal rescue groups who would be willing to send someone to accompany the transport home or contact to german animal shelters who could take the horses in) - we would greatly appreciate it.
with best regards
